NYU Fall 2014 ABSN

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello,

I have noticed there isn't a thread for those applying for NYU Accelerated Nursing Fall 2014. Let's share feedback, advice, stats, etc... I went to an open house today at NYU. They really do stress that since there is no interview, the personal statement is our chance to prove ourselves. They also said they get about 1,000 applicants and a Fall entrance class usually have about 150 students in it.

What part of the application process are you in?

How is the personal statement going?

How many pre-reqs do you have left?

@dee, I looked up the tuition per term and it looks like it's roughly 24-26K (depending on additional fees that they always throw in there last minute) So it looks like financial aid should cover it, if I understand correctly? I am just trying to do the math to see if I can afford to go (if accepted). That doesn't include living expenses either...

Specializes in Pediatrics, Oncology.

What is the total actual estimated cost for the program? Tuition and fees & living/personal expenses??

The website says it is completed in four semesters, so around 100K... Living expenses are probably different for everyone, unless you choose to live in the student housing...I am not sure how much that is

Just want to throw my two cents in- If you go to NYU make SURE you can take out enough money in private loans to cover each semester. NYU aid and federal direct loans will not cover the cost of attendance- I know that there are some other federal loan options for dependent students, but if you're independent like me then that's all you qualify for. I had a VERY low EFC on my fafsa, and the aid/grants/federal loans offered by NYU only covered about half of each semester's tuition. I was able to get a private loan for the first semester, but when I applied for a second private loan for second semester I could not qualify without a cosigner, which I did not have. NYU basically said they couldn't help me and that was that.

Hey guys! For those of you who got their acceptance letters, will you be attending the Meet and Greet on Monday May 12th?

Did anyone get anything today?

Yikes, that is ridiculous. 100K in student loans, plus additional private loans.. If this were a masters program I think I would be more understanding, but for a second bachelors....Also, no one can give me a concrete answer on the quality of the education. My friend who went to NYU (not for nursing ) said you are only paying for the name, and not many employers give you a leg up because of it. Other people I talk to say, OMG NYU I loved it!!! so I don't know...I got accepted to a school in FL (where I have residency) and more than 75% of the tuition is covered, so I may just look into NYU for my masters... Thanks for sharing that NYC, it is good information!

@kd nothing yet....

@kdacayo - nothing  But on a positive note, no news is good news.

Yea I heard it's the name just as well. The issue I have is that it's more simulation than clinicals, according to my friend, so she didn't feel like she learned as much or had any hands on experience

I agree with what some others have said... be practical with costs. For nursing, the 'name' does not matter.....whereas law schools and business schools pedigree plays much more of a role. try to get as much information as you can on a school's NCLEX rates, clinical placements, and post-graduate job placements, and of course current and former students actual experiences. I understand a lot of out-of-staters are attracted to NYU because of the name, because it somehow represents "New York' - but keep in mind that there are a bunch of other schools with lower tuition, excellent education, within the heart of the city. I am not trying to deter anyone, but do keep your options open especially if you have applied to other schools which most likely will put you in less debt, and can provide you with an excellent education. I spent about a week debating between NYU and another school, and when it came down to it the 30K+ difference in price played a prominent role. There are a lot of other things I can think of to do with 30k that are beneficial!

I do believe that NYU does provide an excellent nursing education, just be practical and thoughtful of yourself when making decisions ;)

I wish I could go to the meet and greet but I still have school:(
