nursing program at bmcc 2014

U.S.A. New York

Hello everyone,First of all I want to share with you guys that I have been accepted in the nursing program at bmcc and even though I am really greatful for the opportunity I was surprised that I actually got in.As many of you have read it is really hard to get in any nursing program and especially in BMCC but I believe since the school implemented the HESI exam things have changed incredibly. BMCC has 4 main prerequisites; math104, eng101, bio425 and psy100. Once you have taken this 4 class you are able to make an appointment with the nursing department counselor who would evaluate your transcript and decide if you are eligible to take the HESI exam. Make sure you get A's in this four classes and not lower than B's in the general requierements but if you dont get all A's in the main 4 courses do not panic you still have a chance. I had a 3.5 gpa in only the 4 classes(2 A' and 2 B's) and I was scared to death that I was not even going to get the chance to take the HESI I even applied to other school just in case. However, I went to Mr. Sierra and surprisingly he gave me the green light for the HESI. Since I knew I didnt have the highest gpa's like my friends had I decided to study the most I could for the exam. At BMCC the hesi only covers a&p, math and reading comprenhension, they also include critical thinking which is consoder a tie breaker so dont worry about it. But make sure you pass all 3 with 75 or higher DO NOT FAIL ANY SECTION if you pass them all yyor chances to get in the program are 95%. With that being stated I can only say, do not give up, do not let the gpa terrorize you like it did to me. I got 3.5 gpa and 85 in the hesi (overall) I did not fail any sectio.. Ii know the gpa is really important but iis not your golden ticket to get in. I had friends with 3.8, 3.9 and 4.0 who didnt get in because they either failed the exam or one section.I hope this give yu hope and made a little bit more clear how to proceed in getting to the program at BMCC.If you guys have any questions feel free to email me to [email protected] and I'll be glad to answer them. P.S this requirements are only at BMCC other schools might have different procedures and rules.

Hello Mags,

just wanted to say thanks alot for your post. It def gives me hope to see that u got in without having the 3.9 or 4.0 they scare people into thinking you must have. Congrats on your acceptance, im sure its a wonderful feeling. I am almost done with all my pre-req's, just need micro and will be applying. Im very nervous about the exam, not the best test taker. Im also applying to other evening programs as well, its good to keep your options open. How was the exam? did you find it very difficult and do you have any study tips? Again, thanks for your post, it was a breath of fresh air and very sweet of you to share with all the hopefuls on here :) Look firward to hearing from you.

Hey nycgirl305,

Sorry for not replying much sooner but nursing school is all I do and eat :dead: and there is no free time. anyway ypu will understand it soon. :D

first, if you have time to take a pathophysiology, TAKE IT!!!!!!!! Do not hesitate because it will make your life much easier. I wish someone had given me this advice.

ok, for the Hesi, study a&p from the HESI book, I spent almost 3 weeks studying only for this part and the day of the exam I only found questions from the HESI guide ugh!! something that this guide does not cover is the senses and its parts( hearing;ear, vision;eye) and I got about 3 questions about this, so go over it. reading comprehension, i mean it ishard to study for this part because it is always different but read the guide gives good types in how to understand what the author is implying, if he/she is entertaining etc. I would say do reading comprehension quizzes online and you will be fine. fMath, use the textbook, calculate with confidence, it is really helpful, go over decimals, fractions, definetely ratio and proportion, percentage and make sure yoou know the conversion factors (grams, mL, oz etc). critical thinking is a tie braker so do it at the end since this category is the least important one, however, critical thinking is the most important skill during the program and your nursing career so practice it with online quizzes.

i hope you find this info helpful, if you have more questions dont hesitate!!!!

good luck and let me know how things go!!

thanks so much for all the info. i really appreciate it. im taking ap 2 now and micro in the fall but started studying for the TEAS. Its the required exam for another school im applying to first (Hopfer School of Nursing which is now Montefiore School of nursing) I want to keep my options open but def would love to attend BMCC since I have taken all my pre-req's there and its closer and cheaper. Will def keep you posted. How is the program so far? Is it really tough if you work FT? its great that you were accepted. im sure u were very happy to get that call. Im hanging in there. Im not too worried about my GPA since its high; just a little nervous about the exams but i guess alot of studying will help. Looks like the HESI is a bit easier since the science only covers A&P. The TEAS has Chemistry, ugh..sucks..LOL. will def keep you posted. thanks again for your help. Heidy

Mags,

I forgot to ask, are u in the day or evening program? I will be applying for the evening program since I work at a hospital during the day but I have heard it is not so bad if you manage your time and prioritize. also, where are u doing your clinicals? Thanks so much, Heidy

hello heidy,

once again I apologize for taking so long to respond your question. I am in the day program. I don't know how difficult would be to work full-time but I am assuming the evening program has a different approach since is designed for people like you that works full time and i believe that is why it takes 3yrs. i believe you would be able to make it, like you said, time management and prioritization are essential. something that we are never told when we apply for the program is how much money we would need to spend once we sre accepted and many people find this somehow unfair (i did too) bc some people might not have the money available right away etc. When i got accepted i had to spend about $900 between books, uniforms, cpr class and transportation. i include trasportation because you have to go to the doctor, health department so many times that it becomes expensive if you dont have an unlimited metro card or car.

just wanted to give you an insight in the financial part.

best wishes!!!

Thanks so much for the info. I did read another review that mentioned the costs assosciated with starting the program, Im def saving up. :)

BMCC has good RN program...however they only have associate degree. In the past few years...grads from associates degree programs cannot get jobs and have to go to a BSN program after before they can be hired. idk if this is the most affordable option for you as it is not like in other times when people did an associates got a job and later did their BSN...but not anymore, as all employers give preference to BSNs. CUNYs have BSN programs in which you can do the pre-reqs at night and the last two years do clinicals.

Hey I have a couple questions. I currently attend CSI (college of Staten Island) the pre-reqs are to get a 3.0 here but in bmcc what exactly are the requirements? Background story I didn't do so well on the a&p but I'm still thinking about applying to my nursing program regardless. But how would you rate bmcc? My GPA is kind of low atm but I'm currently going to pull my gpa up.

The general consensus is to get As in the 4 pre-reqs, one being AP1. You also have to take the HESI A2 before getting accepted into the nursing program. The GPA is 3.0--I think.
