New Grad Advice (BSN)

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am currently in my second to last semester of the nursing program. I was told now is a good time to start looking at jobs and trying to make connections.

I am currently a nursing student in Florida looking to move to New York. After reading some posts on here and looking at some hospital's website I'm under the impression that its next to impossible to get a job in the city as a new nurse.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to what my first steps should be as it's too early to apply online. I have signed up for some emails about new grad info at New York-Presbyterian but I feel this is not enough.

I currently am in a bachelors degree program, I have a 2.96 gpa, I was an executive board member of my schools Nursing Student Association for a year, and I have a CNA license but no CNA experience. I also spent 4 years volunteering at a hospital and did my high school internship with a nurse.

Please let me know what I should do to increase my chances of being hired in New York as a New Grad.

Get you GPA up and get a Part time job at a hospital or clinic while still in school. 2 or 3 days a week. NYC want experience. I'm getting my CNA certification and plan on working part time. 1-2 days just for experience. NYP is my dream hospital. My goal is to get in as a nurse aide and work my way up after getting experience at a city hospital. Best wishes. If you think it's impossible it will be.

Most of the time its all about who you know. Most hospitals want experience BUT they do hire new grads. NYP is a very long shot. They give priority to Columbia students and employees. Your GPA must be 3.0 or higher. However you can try applying to their New Grad event and once you PASS the boards keep applying to specific jobs. One more thing there are other EXCELLENT hospitals in NYC other than NYP. Great hospital but personally I donot like the location at all...especially the subway stop. Goodluck am still job hunting!!

Which schools feed into which hospitals? Thanks!

i have wanted to move to new york but learned that it's near impossible to get a job as a new grad...I am planning on working in a large city elsewhere for a couple years then trying to come to NYC. what ways could I stick out at that point and land a job in new york at a big hospital if i don't know anyone in the health care industry in NYC?

Hi, you are exactly correct! I just got into a hospital and I'm still in school. Hospitals these days are blocking people from outside and only offering positions to insiders. My best advice is that you apply to the most recent positions with a 7 day time frame from the current date. A lot of positions are taken already if it's an old position. Also, where in NY are you heading to? If you're near my city in Buffalo, I can give you a recommendation. If you're not around here in Buffalo, ny, then try to get someone to send a referral for you. My hospital pays us to refer an RN or surgical technician so don't be afraid to ask!

Thank you I will keep this in mind!
