Need job in NY...help!!!!!

Good evening everyone,

I need some major help. Currently I reside in Maryland. I've been a Med-Surg Bachelor's prepared nurse for a little over 3 yrs. I received by RN degree and practiced my first 1 1/2 yrs of nursing in the U.S Virgin Islands. The remainder of my nursing career has been spent working in Washington, D.C. My husband lives in NYC for job purposes. I'm relocating to NYC to be with him but can't do so without a job. I've been searching for jobs since November of last yr and that has not turned out as successful as I hoped. I was told that it's best to work in the city and that it wouldn't be as hard to obtain a job since I've got some experience. I beg to differ. I'm in dire need of a job. We plan to live in Brooklyn or Queens so I've been searching for jobs at 3 main Manhattan hospitals: Mount Sinai, NY Presbyterian-Columbia, and Lenox hill. The pickings for job listings that I qualify for at these institutions are so few. I was not selected for 2 job positions I qualified and applied for at Mount Sinai. Haven't heard anything back regarding the single application I filled out at Lenox Hill. And can't find any openings at NYP. Don't know much about hospitals in NY and I'm definitely not getting as far as I would have hoped in this job hunt process. I am open to all suggestions.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! Can anyone suggest any hospitals that would be good to apply to close enough to Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens preferably. However I am definitely open to suggestions anywhere else since there is a chance I might not find a job close to where I plan to live. Thank you.

You might try Maimonades in Brooklyn? SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn? Bellevue hospital or NYU also in Manhattan? NYHQ (New York Hospital Queens) is also fairly close to NYC (in Flushing) and an excellent hospital. Hospital for Special Surgeries? There are lots of options for you, keep trying.

Hey, thought I'd share my personal experience. I posted the info below in another thread, but maybe it'll help you. There are a lot more hospitals than you'd think, all with manageable commutes from Penn Station:

"Hello all those looking for a nursing job in New York City! I've been searching for months, and thought it was about time to share my thoughts and wisdom. Below is my map & extensive hospital spreadsheet:

If you download the spreadsheet, try highlighting all the data + right click + 'custom sort' by # beds, hospital network, or travel time from Penn Station. This data is all updated from US News Best Hospitals, hospital websites, and salaries from Allnurses.

Things I've learned:

1) The search is intimidating to start, but once you understand the websites it gets easier! I've been regularly applying to HHC, NYP, NSLIJ, NYU, Continuum, Mount Sinai, and Montefiore.

2) Continuum has no jobs. NYP will not accept your app if you don't meet the experience requirements. NYU is not seeking outside applicants at this time

3) New grads and ADNs positions are hard to come by and highly competitive.

4) Get your NY RN license. Make sure your resume & cover letter are flawless.

5) Keep in touch with your HR contacts. Cold-calling and walk-ins have gotten me nowhere...but hey, it's worth a shot.

6) Consider NJ jobs. I never got around to obtaining my NJ license or applying there.

7) Hurricane Sandy has majorly screwed things up. Hospitals are not hiring aggressively."

New York visiting nurse association of manhattan is great.

tell them your 2 areas you want. $10,000 sign on bonus paid over 2 years. Great benefits with 4 weeks vacation first year.

No, not yet. I had a shot at NYU's Emergency Department, but Hurricane Sandy literally destroyed the ED (now they function as urgent care). I'm pursuing one more NYC hospital, but if that fails I'll be looking west. I wanted to jump from trauma floor nursing to ED/ICU nursing in NYC. My resume just hasn't made the cut: 1-year RN experience, BSN 3.8 GPA, TNCC, ACLS...

I'm desperate for a part time or per diem job in NYC but my resume isn't so impressive like yours. I only have 1 year experience as an RN, Med-Surg with telemetry experience, BLS, Associates (currently enrolled in an online BSN course)....

I'm planning to keep my current job here in NJ. I just need a second job to help pay my bills and my parents' bills (which I'm helping them with). I also don't want to put my NYS RN license to waste. I'm looking for something "lighter" than floor nursing. My current job on Med-Surg is really stressful sometimes even though I work night shift. I want something like an office job in NYC, an ambulatory care setting. Something where patients just come and go. A 9 to 5 type of job. I saw some positions on Craigslist and applied but to some clinics but haven't heard anything back. I'm patiently waiting. Anyone know of any clinics in NYC or even nursing homes?
