Nassau Community College : Anyone Applying for Spring 2011

Congrats to all that got accepted this round!!! Adi1, are you in the day or evening program? I got accepted to the evening program and my interview is on the same day. I can't give you any insight on the interview process, but if you check back on earlier posts in this thread there is a lot of helpful info from people who got into the program.

Kitkat, Yes it is hard but do-able. This semester the second exam that they gave us was VERY difficult, and that test hurt a lot of people's averages, and the faculty knew it because basically almost half the class did bad. When alot of people do bad on a test a whole they evaluate the test and throw questions out that the majority got wrong because they feel the question was too tricky and alot of us got extra points (up to 10). The third test we had the teachers told us would hlep us out and it was much easier and alot of students passed and got over 90s. THey work with you. All the teachers have office hours twice a week for extra help. On Saturdays they hold extra help sessions that are to prepare you for the next exam. THe help is there if you are not doing well.

My advice: *Very Important*- You need to do alot of practice questions before the tests. THere are a few books called the nursing success books which are only questions and they are categorized so you can stick to the topic your test is on. The more questions you do the better you will do. The tests are about applying the information you read about in the textbook and applying it to situations, so you definately need to practice questions.

Also, any text book you use, make sure you also get the study guides for it. THey help.

Last thing, they will give you alot if information to read and go over for the test- stick to whats on the reading list and your powerpoint slides. I found the reading list to be pretty much a guideline of whats on the test. If its not on the reading list don't go nuts reading the entire chapter because its a waste of time, and also- all test questions are from the MAIN textbook that you are using. The reading list has other books on it, but that is just more information that will not be on the test. FIrst semester you will be using the Kozier textbook (I did, don't know if they changed it)...only study that book-reading the nutrition book and pharmacology book will not help you on the test. QUestions are based out of the Kozier book only. THat was my experience- I dont know if they change things but make sure you ask. The first test I failed because I read the entire list and half the stuff I read wasnt on the test and I told me teacher that and she told me the other stuff on the reading list is to help understand the concepts and give additional information but all test questions are based on information read in the main textbook.

Congrats as well doubletrouble2, I am not sure whether I am accepted in the day or evening program. My letter did not specify. Did your letter mention whether it is day or evening? What time is your interview.

I'm in the eve program at the moment and the schedule is mostly 5:30Pm to 9:20Pm some night for lab & lecture and 6-10:30Pm for clinical for 4 nights a week. Some clinical nights we needed to stay longer to finish up meds. Definitely give yourself time to write papers. Some of my papers took 8 hours or longer to do but you have usually week to do it. Studying takes up a lot of your time and you need to be accessible to the internet to check emails or newly posted info on blackboard. Your schedule sounds grueling. I hope you'll be able to get enough sleep cause that's important too.

You can get your physical anywhere just make sure your physician fills it out properly or you'll have to make another trip back to the doctor's office. You'll need to contact the health services department regarding immunizations but the health form should list all the immunizations you need to get or at least proof that you've had them.

You'll need to check with the nursing department to see if eve classes are offered the semester you are applying. They do not always have eve classes because there may not be enough money or professors. Good luck! Hope this helps!

I just got my acceptance letter today, pending an interview on 5/20. Don't worry about the interview it's nothing crazy. I know a few people that I work with who got in for the Jan '13 class and they said it was more like an orientation. They explain the program, ask you to define a few simple words, write a little essay then they give you you packet which contains your schedule and all the requirements. Good Luck and don't worry!!
