Hi All,

I am currently in LVN school in California and will be graduating this coming November. I am relocating to Upstate NY in November and need to know what to do about the NCLEX and NY licensing. Since I will graduate from a California school, can I take the NCLEX in NY and what do I need to do to apply for NY licensing after I pass the NCLEX. (Positive thinking, ya'll). Thank you for the input.

Hello,

I'm moving to NY too after I graduate. You need to look on the NYBON's website and look at application forms and follow the instructions on become a licensed LVN in NY. My school told me to print out the forms and fill out the paper work, then I have to submit the paperwork to them along with the fee for registration & first licensure, which is $143 (I believe for both RN's & LVN's) then they will fill out the rest and then mail it to the NYBON. Link is here: NYS Nursing:Application Forms RN LPN

Also check the requirements: NYS Nursing:License Requirements

You also must do this to become a LVN in NY:

In addition to the professional education requirement, every licensed practical nurse must complete approved coursework or training appropriate to the professional's practice in infection control and barrier precautions, including engineering and work practice controls, to prevent the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice.

RN's have to do this along with completing approved coursework/training in child abuse. If you go on the link I provided you they have a list of approved providers so you should be able to take it in your state. If not, you have 90 days to obtain it within your licensure.

You should also be able to take your NCLEX in CA and just opt for the NY license because that is who you are submitting your paperwork. I live in OH and I was told I can take the NCLEX here and instead of an OH license, opt for an NY license. The NCLEX is standardized, meaning it's the same everywhere in the U.S., but every state has different requirements that you must meet to be able to practice there.

Good luck with your LAST semester of nursing school! I graduate this December :yeah:

Thank you for the information. I am hoping to take the NCLEX in NY, because I need to leave California as soon as school is out. Since it is standardized hopefully that won't be an issue.

Thank you again and congrats on your December graduation.

Hey guys!

I dont know if this will answer yoru questions. But I graduated from Nursing School in NOrth Carolina in May. Since I moved to NYC, I took my NCLEX here and so now I am certified RN in the state of NY! I would also recommend it to you all to take your exam wherever you will be practicing nursing.

Good Luck!
