Long Island Nurses Please Read!

U.S.A. New York

Hi,

Does anyone know of a reentry or residency program for an inexperienced nurse? I graduated a long time ago, and my only experience is as a school nurse teacher. I also took a refresher course at Molloy a few years ago. I have an RN and a BS from Adelphi University. I am taking an online master's program in psychiatric nursing. I am looking for a reentry or residency, internship etc. It doesn't have to be in psych. If you know of any, please list the hospital and what kind of programs they have for reentry nurses who need hands on teaching by nursing educaters. Thank you krisssy

Do you actually have a current RN license in NY? That will be needed for any refresher course.

Suzanne,

Yes I have a current RN in the state of NY. I also have a BSN, and I am working toward an MSN. I took the refresher course at Molloy College a few years ago. I did well, but I need more hands on education. Actually, I was offered a night job at South Nassau (Ortho) at the time, but I didn't take it , because I needed to go in for surgery (prolapsed rectum), and then I had another emergency surgery for a blockage from adhesions. So I have been going to online grad school while I have been recovering. I am finally ready to start looking for a job. Thanks for any suggestions or ideas you may have.

I was thinking in terms of taking another refresher course at Adelphi, because they do their clinicals at Winthrop. I have been told that Winthrop likes "mature" nurses and that they have good residency programs in specific areas. I thought they may hire me if I do my refresher clinicals there, and I do well.

Any Long Island feedback you can give me would be helpful. I have heard of these long residencies out of state. I want to stay here on Long Island. Thanks

Stony Brook and Winthrop both hire new grads and returning RNs (correlation being that both usually need a real thorough orientation and an environment conducive to learning--ie an approachable staff, docs on premises at all times, patience, etc).

Good luck!
