How much do NY nurses make?

I am new to the forum. I just moved back up to NY from Orlando Florida. I am an experienced RN-C (over 2 years). I have an ASN degree. In Florida I started at $17.05/hr as a GN in 2002, and was making $18.75/hr base before I moved. I was working the night shifts - 7pm-7am, and every other weekends. In Florida, we got between 15-33% more for differentials for nights and weekends and a little higher for holidays. My salary did include benefits and 401K, ect. I made a total of $41,000 last year working the night shift. I currently live in Long Island, Nassau county, and was wondering if anyone can tell me how much I will make working in one of the local hospitals in Nassau county? How much an hour? how much are the night differentials? How much a year? I am hoping to work for one of the North Shore hospitals, hopefully on a post surgical womens unit (if they have a unit like that, or mother baby), which is where I worked in Florida. I was also wondering how do the night differentials work, are they a % of what you make or do they give you more/hr? Any help will be greatly aprreciated. Thanks. :p

When days/nights. how much experience you have stuff like that. As a new grad I've had offers starting at $60,000/yr and as much as $68,000/year. If you break it down to hourly it ends up being $45/hr to $55/hr. that's what I've seen

i am from the philippines. i had 2 nursing experience in ward, i worked as a company nurse for a year also. the agency i signed is assigning me downtown ny maybe in long island. the 3 years contract i signed was $22/hour and i will recieve my increase after 6 months which will be 25/hour.

I have been with the state for 20 years, i became a nurse in 1992, i make 47,000, pretty pathetic..........and i am a charge nurse and make no more that the people i supervise, and some shouldn't even be nurses...........and get no perks......i work every other weekend.....the evening shift makes $5000 more, and the night shift makes $7000 more...........new nurses start at what i make , reason? so they will say yes to being hired.............funny, no one ever gave me top salary when i started a new job :angryfire

I won't graduate until June of next year with an associates. (Counting down the days!) I plan to stay in Brooklyn or Queens. I hate commuting by subway. Were your offers from hospitals in Manhattan? I'm sure they are offering more than the other boroughs.

Hi I am in upstate ny at a state facility, the state pays terrible compared to private, so for all you're aggravation you'd be better off not working for the state of ny, UNLESS benefits are what you are looking for....there are location differentials, so if you live down state you make more than upstate. I would have gotten my bachelors instead of my associates, because, it opens more doors everwhere, i encourage you to keep going, and find something that you are passionate about doing in nursing, it is much more than bedside nursing, we are no longer florence nightengales, who were subserviant, we are strong and in charge more than we ever have been..good luck

If you are really interested in Living in NY city but not sure if you will like it - try travel nursing. It is a great opportunity to try things without the long term committment, usually just 3 months. They will put you up in an apartment in the city and give you an hourly. I don';t know what the going rate is but I know it will be more than 20 including an apt.

I agree!!! That is the best way to see if NYC is where you really want to stay.

As a charge nurse lpn in upstate ny I make 16.50 an hr plus time and a half over 7.5 hrs i make around38,000.-43,000. year

Answer is NO. Sorry. That's the catch. Living in NYC or near to it, is among the highest cost of livings in the world. People commute for 2 hours or more from all around the area, even from Connecticut and New Jersey, because of it. If you are willing to do a roomate thing, with a search firm that matches you, its riskier business but possibly do-able.

Some nursing friends have just graduated this June with an ASN. One has already been offered a job at Sloan Kettering. 12 hour day shift. 62 K. She will have another nurse shadow her for the first 3 months. They choose the floor she works on the first year, afterwards she can choose.

I can't wait until I graduate this December!!

Update: During the initial interview she was told 62K. When she was called back they offered her 66K. She accepted the job and will start in October!
