How much do NY nurses make?

I am new to the forum. I just moved back up to NY from Orlando Florida. I am an experienced RN-C (over 2 years). I have an ASN degree. In Florida I started at $17.05/hr as a GN in 2002, and was making $18.75/hr base before I moved. I was working the night shifts - 7pm-7am, and every other weekends. In Florida, we got between 15-33% more for differentials for nights and weekends and a little higher for holidays. My salary did include benefits and 401K, ect. I made a total of $41,000 last year working the night shift. I currently live in Long Island, Nassau county, and was wondering if anyone can tell me how much I will make working in one of the local hospitals in Nassau county? How much an hour? how much are the night differentials? How much a year? I am hoping to work for one of the North Shore hospitals, hopefully on a post surgical womens unit (if they have a unit like that, or mother baby), which is where I worked in Florida. I was also wondering how do the night differentials work, are they a % of what you make or do they give you more/hr? Any help will be greatly aprreciated. Thanks.

I heard new grads get 58-64k depending on the hospital... Being that you have 2 years exp. you might end up in the 66k range (depending on the hospital of course)

New Grads that start at the hospital I am working at in orange county are starting at $58,000/year and that doesn't include shift differential!

Many big name hospitals in NYC start around 62-65K plus differencial for evening and nights. Bachelor gets $1500-2000 more than the base rate.

Some of them hire only Bachelor degree RNs...NYU, Sloan-Kettering, Mt. Sinai.etc...I think they would hire exp. Rns with associate only if they are in school for attaining a bachelor's degree. Contact them for accuracy.

NYC area hospitals offer a much higher pay rate. However the cost of living is much higher in those areas.

Really, that's all for upstate NY?? That is about the same as Florida.

Thats pretty much the base rate for new grads in my area. You do get shift differential. I don't think it is as high as you are presently recieving. Where I work we get $1.75 for evening $2.00 for nights on weekends the shift is $3.00 for nights.

Some hospitals offer nice sign on bonus.

The cost of living is lower. You can buy a beautiful home in a excellent area

for $150,000. A lot cheaper than NYC.

I have a related question for you guys: Can a recent grad (with that kind of salary) afford to rent a nice 1 bed apartment in Manhattan, along with all other living expenses?

I ask because I always wanted to live and experience the City, even if it's for only a year or two.

you can afford it...but WHY? Why overpay an extra 300-400 dollars a month to live in the city when you can live in Queens or Brooklyn for much less. Put that money in your pocket and save it and commute an extra 20 minutes. Sorry I grew up in NYC (raised in BK) and dont see why people do it....sorry but after 2 years of nursing school hell I wouldnt want to live in a tuna can and pay what people in brooklyn/queens pay for 2 bedroom apartments. Just my 2 cents.

Tuna can. LOL! (Sad thing is you're not exaggerating, I've seen them)

Your 2 cents make a lot of sense, kevin and Queens was my very next choice (my ex g/f is from there.
