How much do NY nurses make?

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello,

I am new to the forum. I just moved back up to NY from Orlando Florida. I am an experienced RN-C (over 2 years). I have an ASN degree. In Florida I started at $17.05/hr as a GN in 2002, and was making $18.75/hr base before I moved. I was working the night shifts - 7pm-7am, and every other weekends. In Florida, we got between 15-33% more for differentials for nights and weekends and a little higher for holidays. My salary did include benefits and 401K, ect. I made a total of $41,000 last year working the night shift. I currently live in Long Island, Nassau county, and was wondering if anyone can tell me how much I will make working in one of the local hospitals in Nassau county? How much an hour? how much are the night differentials? How much a year? I am hoping to work for one of the North Shore hospitals, hopefully on a post surgical womens unit (if they have a unit like that, or mother baby), which is where I worked in Florida. I was also wondering how do the night differentials work, are they a % of what you make or do they give you more/hr? Any help will be greatly aprreciated. Thanks. :p

sorry but after 2 years of nursing school hell I wouldnt want to live in a tuna can and pay what people in brooklyn/queens pay for 2 bedroom apartments. Just my 2 cents

Tuna can. LOL! (Sad thing is you're not exaggerating, I've seen them)

Your 2 cents make a lot of sense, kevin and Queens was my very next choice (my ex g/f is from there.

thanks, dude.

Some places in BK and Queens are getting just as expensive as Manhattan (Astoria, Williamsburg and Park Slope come to mind). I got a large 1 bedroom apartment in Inwood that's close to where I'll be going to school and hopefully working someday, and I don't think I'm paying much more than I would in another borough. Rents in Inwood for a 1 bedroom are between 800-1200 a month.

just for refference. In Sheepsheadbay brooklyn (which is considered a very good area) a 2 bedroom will run you 1100-1300 bucks. It will be a 40 minute commute into the city.

Really, that's all for upstate NY?? That is about the same as Florida. :o

Michele.

Life in upstate NY is very different from life in NYC. Everything costs more in the city, especially rent (even for a 'tuna can'). Would you believe me if I told you there are places upstate where you can still buy a 4 bedroom colonial style home (with a nice big yard) for under $200k! So yes, salaries are a bit lower there than here in the city.

be that as it may...I couldnt live in upstate NY even for FREE. I've lived out on long island for a year and on any given day you could of told me I was in Eastern Europe I wouldnt have known a difference.... To each his/her own...

Can't say I blame you. Living in upstate NY would be a stretch for anyone who's used to city life, especially NYC city life.:)

one bedroom apt in the city is around 1600. im renting a loft for 1200 in 21st/2nd ave. its a walking distance to my hospital though.:)

That is great news!

I have a related question for you guys: Can a recent grad (with that kind of salary) afford to rent a nice 1 bed apartment in Manhattan, along with all other living expenses?

I ask because I always wanted to live and experience the City, even if it's for only a year or two.

I'm from FL btw.

Thanks.

The kind of place you are talking about will cost upwards of $2,000. You may have to stockpile the ramen noodles to conserve cash. Welcome to Manhattan. : )

Living in NYC is definitely a dream of mine, and while the costs of living there will be steeper than in other places, I can get rid of my car and all the other expenses that go with it. All I know, is that if I am going to work in the city, I'm living in the city...that's part of the excitement. I figure I work two 12hr OT shifts, it'll bring my rent to very affordable means.

If you are really interested in Living in NY city but not sure if you will like it - try travel nursing. It is a great opportunity to try things without the long term committment, usually just 3 months. They will put you up in an apartment in the city and give you an hourly. I don';t know what the going rate is but I know it will be more than 20 including an apt.

NYC area hospitals offer a much higher pay rate. However the cost of living is much higher in those areas.

I live in upstate NY New grad start here between $ 19 - $20 an hour.

Casper Im in Rochester too--going to MCC. I'm curious which hospital you work for. (OK to PM me if you'd rather)
