Hoping to Apply to Stony Brook's 12-Month Accelerated Program!

U.S.A. New York

Hi there,

My name is Mindy and I am new to the forum! I am glad to have found it. I have had an interest in nursing for awhile, but I never knew that such a program existed that allowed students with a bachelor's degree in another field. I have worked as a Coordinator in the not-for-profit industry in a large agency for developmentally disabled adults for the past two years. I had been planning on going to Stony Brook in September 2011 to get my MSW and practicing Social Work. The residential nurse that works at the house I work at happened to suggest nursing, and mentioned that most schools had different pathways for those with degrees. I was over the moon to find Stony Brook had such a program, especially as an alumni.

Naturally, I am missing some prerequisites (Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and Microbiology) but I am going to take these in September at Nassau Community College (has anyone had any experience transferring these?) NCC is close to where I reside and is so inexpensive. I have taken many summer and evening classes there.

So, is there anything I should consider when applying to the program? I think there will still be a year or so before I actually submit my application, but the idea of a career in nursing is so exciting! Can anyone shed some light on the experience?

Thanks for your time!!

Hi mindylane,

I would advice you to search for the thread that says" Stony Brok U ABSN by Paco69, that thread has been in existence for over a year, and its the most interactive thread I came across on this website. Look for it and you will get more than you bargained for. Am also awaiting the acceptance letter for summer 2011, so I also visit that thread frequently.

But in the meantime, I think it would be better if you can take your prerequisite during the summer 2011 semester, so that by the end of summer you have some if not all prerequisite ready. The application begins in September, if am correct, and deadline is usually Nov 1st. So if you are planing on taking your prerequisite in Sept, then you may not be able to apply for the summer 2012 class. More so, its a very competitive program, so You have to have at-least some prerequisites ready with very good grades prior to application.

As per experience, I think with your background, you are more than fine, so all you need to support that is a very good personal statement and 3 solid letters of recommendation. I wish you good luck, and I think you are on the right track. I was just like you last year, I found about ABSN program by chance at my place of work sometimes in February, and since then I became very aggressive at pursing it.

So far, I had received 2 acceptance letters from 2 schools, and one of the school even offered me a scholarship. So you just have to make up your mind, and pursue your vision so that it can become a mission. Good-luck!!!!!

Good luck Mindi :))
