Going to NYU's 15-month accelerated program

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi,

I will be moving to New York from Oregon to begin the 15-month accelerated program at NYU. I love New York and I almost went to NYU four years ago. I wish I knew more about the school of nursing and the program though. Of course, I am just excited to be so much closer to becoming a nurse. In Oregon, the competition is ridiculous. It's like applying to medical school. Even though NYU is super expensive, the program is so much shorter than anything around here and the sooner you get to work the less expensive the program really is.

So, I am trying to find out more about it. Does anyone know how many students got in, or better yet, is there anyone else out there who also plans to begin the program in September? I haven't gotten my packet of information yet so I really know NOTHING about the program except what is on the website (which is not very much). Any information would help my curiousity.

Hello!

It depends on how much money you're willing to spend. I have classmates from out-of-town living anywhere from NYU's dorm to Westchester (upstate NY) and New Jersey. Apartment from Manhattan is super expensive, a studio can starts at $2000 or more each month. If you don't mind traveling, Queen or Brooklyn are good choice. Again, the travel time depends on which part of town you choose. I think Astoria (Queen) is pretty decent place to live and very close to a lot of clinical sites.

Don't forget to pack your down jacket and snow boot for the winter!

Hope this help--good luck!

Thanks Sammi,

I have decided to go with the dorms, and I was wondering what you know about them. It seemed that the 26th street dorm would probably be best since it is close to the nursing school/dental school. Would you recommend any of the others? Do you have any idea when they let you move into the dorm? I am trying to set up my flight to NY and I don't want to get there before I can move in to my room.

In terms of footwear for clinicals, are there restrictions for color or type of shoe? Where do I buy the infamous purple scrubs?

Do you know if there is an orientation for new nursing students starting in the spring term? I haven't really gotten much info from the school yet, so I don't really have any idea of what to expect.

Any help would be much appreciated, and thanks for the info you have graciously given already!

Hello Julie

Just for your FYI--majority of the nursing classes will be held in the West 4th Street (Washington Square) campus. So, I don't think you need to live at the 26th Street dorm unless you prefer to. I only had two classes there in my first semester and for the rest of the program, I never step another foot in the dental school. One good new about living at 26th street is that you'll be very close to NYU Tisch Medical Center (33rd Street and 1st Ave) for your clinical. I don't live in the dorm so I'm not in the position to give you any advice but a lot of my classmates just LOVE the dorm at Water Street, they said it's big, clean, and has a nice view of the river. As for the clinical shoe, it must be leather in all white and must covers your entire feet. Moc and backless are NOT acceptable. As for purple scrub, you can purchase at the NYU's Health Science bookstore at 333 East 29th Street. The scrub top comes with school name engraved. Your name tag needs to be specially order at the NYU main bookstore (18 Washington Place) and it takes 2 weeks to make.

I started school in the fall semester which my orientation date is different from your. Why don't you contact the nursing school directly. Here is their phone number 212-998-5300.

I hope this help and good luck with you nursing career!
