clinic in the bronx, dangerous?

U.S.A. New York

I'm going for my first interview since I graduated in May and I'm wondering about the safety of the area. It's located in East Tremont Avenue, and I have heard some crazy stories about shootings and such in the bronx. Anyone know this area? Would it be really bad idea to walk in a suit, alone during the day there?

Sorry I'm so late responding to this. The subway late at night could be an issue, only because late at night there are not as many ppl riding it and there is a chance that some unsavory individuals can hang out in the station looking for trouble. Being that it's a clinic, I can't imagine that it would be open that late. However, someone else suggested taking a cab to a better area and that may be a good idea. If you have the opportunity, take it. Jobs are very scarce right now and there are definitely ways to avoid trouble if you really want the job.

Clinics are open late night? Maybe its urgent care? Most clinics I know are 8am to 6pm. However if you are in such neighborhood late at night...u can ask how your coworkers travel to the subway and you can partner with her/him/them and walk there or share a cab. Or if a coworker drives maybe they can drop u off at the subway on their way home.

Once at the subway, wait by the MTA agent booth until your train arrives. At least you are in well lit area and someone is available to help in case of anything and their presence may deter any shady action on part of a stranger. Once in the subway get in the car where the conductor is. If anything happens you can knock on their door. I have been on the subway late night (after midnight) many times and never had an issue but u can follow the above to feel safe.

Is this job worth all the hassle worrying about your safety commuting to and from it? Just asking. I know the job market is tight but dang. BTW, I grew up in the Bronx, so I have always known that area to be 'hot' but more so in the 70s and 80s when I was a kid. The Bronx is changing though neighborhood by neighborhood for the better, but it seems this area of Tremont maintains some heat from what I am reading here. If you must, pairing up with a coworker or two is your best strategy for commuting safely. Subways are not as desolate as they used to be either. I've taken the subway at 3am at times and you'd swear it was rush hour!
