Specializes in Hoping to be a peds nurse..

Hi My name is Les,

Im currently a prenursing student living in St. Louis. I plan to finish my associates degree in nursing and move to the NYC city area, work full time while finshing up my BSN. I would like to be a pediatric nurse. Ive looked at the webstites for a few of the childerns hosptials in the area and they all seem to be top rated. Do any hire without a BSN?

All hospitals in NYC hire ADN nurses. It's just a matter of supply and Demand. If while they are presently hiring, there are more BSN's then ADN's, they will tend to hire more on the BSN side, but if the ADN's step up their game and sell themselves appropriately, no one can deny them.

If a hospital is in need to fill many positions hospital wide and the pool of applicants consists of both BSN's and ADN's, they will take from both.

Apply to all hospitals in the city with Pediatric units and you will get call backs,

I was interested in NYU and was told by a nurse who works there that they hire BSN only.

NYU and NYP only hires nurses with BSN.

Wrong on both accounts. NYP hires many ADN's, just simply call them and they will tell you themselves. The key is that they "PREFER" BSN nurses, but they certainly hire ADN nurses. NYU also hires ADN's, but they tend to do so only when in need to crucially fill spots. Moreover, NYU is also partial to their students.

Also, realize that there are a large number of ADN nurses in NYC that have many years of experience and have not decided to go back to school. These nurses when approaching an interview have the advantage of years of experience versus 2-4 years of theoretical study that can't compare. No matter what some website might say, apply and you will see that they do hire ADN's.

Sometimes what helps is to be very proactive and go in to see the recruiter at these hospitals. A little secret NYP doesn't talk about much is that their location uptown Columbia Presbyterian has a heavy amount of ADN's versus BSN nurses, so look into that..

Don't advertise that these hospitals don't hire ADN's, because that will only cause others to give up before trying..

Remember only 30% of RNs have BSN degrees so the other 70 will definitely find a job somewhere.

OP, Saint Marys Children's Hospital in Bayside hires LPNs so you should apply there since you are a RN already.

Hi guys, I'm reading the responses in this thread about ADN nurses, I'm LPN right now with 3 years experience in dialysis working at a LI hospital. I will be graduating in 4 mons, I would like to work for a city hospital, preferably NYP, however I have been getting discouraged with the talk that they don't hire ADNs. I'm doing everything I can to spruce up my resume by taking ACLS and getting dialysis nurse certification. I'm interested in branching out in another specialty of nursing, is there anything else I can do to improve my chances. Thank you for your help.

You're all right on the ADN/BSN thing. Some do specify that they require, some specify that they prefer. With the demand not so huge anymore, they can be picky and pick only BSN nurses (as new grads that is, once you have experience, things usually get easier). You have nothing to lose by applying (since you're not even wasting money on good paper and stamps anymore :) ), the worst they could say is no.

The bottom line is, if they don't like you for wahtever reason, they could use the whole "you don't have a BSN" excuse.

As far as peds hospitals in NYC, you may be better off at St marys or Elizabeth Seton (formerly NY founding hosp). These are not acute care hospitals, but skilled nursing/subacute hospitals. There are no critical care units, but there are chronically ill kids, some with trachs, central lines, GTs, etc. It's a great starting point for peds.

Just so you know, St mary's is in Queens, which is in NYC, but not in Manhattan. It's actually on the end of Queens.

There is also Blythedale, which is in Westchester, just north of the city. It is the same type of facility, they may take ADN nurses.
