Hello all,

I have been wanting to apply to nursing school forever (well.....really since 2006 when I left my first school). I began my college education at the most expensive school in NYC. Anyways I left after some time due to $$$$/family issues and then transferred to a SUNY. While I was there I became very sick to the point I was making three-five trips a day to the ER and was unable to work. I left my SUNY in order to become closer to a free place live and get better. I am now all healthy and set to attend a 4-yr CUNY in the fall as a History major.

When I attended the SUNY:

AP I: B

AP II: C

Gen Chem:B-

Orgo/Biochem:C

Stats: C+

Gen Bio II: B

Micro: B+

and a C and A in both Psychs. I know the grades are not great but I was as close to death's doors as I think I will be unless I really pass this life (believe it or not.....I still did better than a lot of the nursing students in the SUNY school). I am better now and plan to take over the AP's again and Orgo/Chem.

My cum GPA is a 3.0 and if I get better grades in those 3 science I think that will help in the whole admin process.

I just wanted to know if you think I have a chance I getting in. I even have professors from my second school willing to give my recommendations and explain my withdrawals/and less than stellar average

I know it says the whole 2.75 thing does that mean I can automatically get in or that is just their minimum requirement and that they usually pick those with a 3.5+?

I was planning on graduating and then go onto a second degree program but I am an independent student. For those who don't know sometimes being independent sometimes means getting the s***t-end of the financial aid stick and on top of that I am way below the poverty line and have no dependents (Thank God). So I was thinking I should just get my BSN during this first round while I still qualify for Pell, SEOG,and anything else and since I am still under 30. If I get in I will still have 3 yrs left in my 20s to have fun after graduation.

Anyways I just wanted to ask the questions:

1) For those who transferred to LIU: what was your GPA when you did transfer ( in particular your science grades)? and what was the finaid they gave you?

2) For transfer students w/o a previous bachelors or associate degree: did you have to complete all those extra courses like philosophy and extra English ( I took two already from my 1st school)---I am setting up my schedule at CUNY in a way that would beneficial to me if I do get into LIU

2) Is it possible to get scholarships as a Continuing student? e.g. get a 3.5+ or above your first semester and then you get a little gift from the FinAID office

3) I read a lost of horror stories on here already about 50%+ failure rates. Is is really that bad? or is that just because one does not study enough?

4) I read somewhere on here that PDAs come with the program is that true? (not really important but just wanted to know)

5) How was then entrance HESI?

6) If I get into the Fall 2010 cohort (my goal) am I guaranteed my spot? eg. I have read they accept like 100+ a semester.... is there enough room for everyone or do some get moved to later semesters? (I hope to avoid so I am going to apply for Fall 2010 after I get my better grades -- going by faith the size of a mustard seed-- at the end of the Fall 2009 semester. Getting A's which is feasible -just relearning old material- will raise my science GPA to a 3.18 (and that is with an C from APII which I plan to take over in the Spring 2010 semester).

7) I would just like your take on the school and how the workload is, the $$$ spent on books ( just for future reference)

8) Extra question: I dream on becoming a NNP or a PNP who specializes in Oncology. I know that those areas might not necessarily be in clinicals but I know at some schools a student can take an independent course and study a particular field of practice. Is that possible @ LIU?

I am so psyched to go back to school. LIU is like the only school ( in this area) that does not average prerequisites if repeated(according to the lady I talked in the Nursing dept) and does not have nosebleed $$$$$ so this is not only my first choice but my last hope. I am finally healthy after being ill for 2.5 yrs and I am ready to roll out the 4.0.

Thank you for reading and responding.

God Bless,

I am a current student of LIU who transferred in. I'm not in the nursing program yet but I'll let you know everything I do lol. First of all let me start out by saying that a 3.0 is good enough to get into the nursing program. The problem is that they look at two gpa's. First they look at your overall and then they look at your sciences. Both grades have to be a 2.75 or higher. While they prefer students to have a higher gpa you can get in with at least that in both gpa's. The GPA is exactly what it says it is which is one of the good things about LIU. Your seat isn't guaranteed, it's based on whether or not you pass the nursing entrance exam which isn't all that hard.

Also, your grades aren't as bad as you think. I transferred to LIU from a CUNY college and the way that they do your grades are a little different. Any grades that have + or -'s get rounded. So for example, the classes you got a C+ or C- turn out to be a C. They do use the + and - scale but not when you are transferring. LIU is not all that great when it comes to financial aid, I did thankfully get just enough to cover tuition. However, you did say you live below the poverty line so if your income is less than 15,000 you shouldn't worry much because I think that your tuition will mainly be almost fully covered. There are no set prices for tuition. It's based on how many credits you take so someone with 18 credits pays more than the student taking 13 a semester. They DO raise tuition every year though.

So time to answer your questions.

1) My transfer GPA was 2.2 but I had no science pre-reqs. I was accepted as just a regular liberal arts student and when I raised my GPA I changed my major to nursing. My current gpa is a 3.4.

3) I don't really think it's because the program is THAT bad like some people say it is. I think it's moreso because they let in more students than they probably should. As you know most nursing programs don't have 100+ students. The way that they do it is that you have exit hesi's and med calc tests nearly every semester and students that can't pass usually get dropped from the program. About 60-80 students do graduate every year though, so I guess it depends.

4) I'm not positive but they do have a nursing kit that you buy your first semester with supplies, I'm just not sure what is in them.

5) It's extremely easy, they don't count the science portions, just the reading, math, grammar and vocab. You need a 75 and above in each section to get in but if you get between a 70 and 75 they accept in the part time program.

6) If you get accepted into the nursing program, have passed the entrance exam and all, then you are guaranteed that spot. They never move students and usually the classes they make for the first semester are never full. I'll be starting Fall 2010 as well and they told me that once I finish my science pre-reqs and pass then I'm in. LIU doesn't have a seperate application like most schools, if you get in as a nursing student that is what you are. It stays pending till you finish everything but if you do they can't take away your seat no matter how many students there are.

7) I personally like the school throughout my pre-reqs. The nursing courses are much more difficult and require a lot more time. The books are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. Most of the math and science books are over 100 on average. For a lot of the science books they don't have used copies. The cheaper looseleaf copies can't be sold back to the store ect.

8) As far as my knowledge there isn't any. But the school has a lot of connections with hospitals and a lot of students had preceptorships during their final year/semester which allow you to look into a specific field.

Finally, as far as the other college requirements like English and History, I transferred in with all but three of those requirements. All of those classes must be finished before you can start nursing courses so you can't do philosophy or anything while you are doing nursing classes, they all have to be done before. If you want to take them at a CUNY school instead of LIU to cut costs then I suggest you do it. The English Lit classes and the History classes don't have to be an any particular subject. Whether it be American or European, Asian ect, you just need two of them. Take an intro to philosophy and ethics class for the two philosophy classes, speech is any intro to speech class. Sociology or Anthro have to the be intro courses. I transferred in with Gender Anthropology and it didn't count toward the requirement. Since you took college level statistics, they should wave the finite mathematics part.

I'm glad that you are excited. Even though there have been a lot of negative comments, I got into a nursing program and there was no way that I wasn't going to be completely thrilled. I like the school, some people don't and maybe it's because they didn't start out here or they went to a school that was different but I know that the people that transferred from the stressful CUNY schools DEFINETELY see an advantage to going there. There will probably be some recent grads or current students who will reply and say "DON'T COME HERE IT'S AWFUL" and that's alright too, but for me, since this was my only option, I'm just going to be optimistic about it all and graduate regardless of how many hurdles the school might through at me. Good luck though, who knows maybe we'll be in the same nursing orientation next year!

Thank you so much. I have so many LibArts credits done I know I have History, Soc, Speech, English 16 and 17 and one course in African American Lit. I am on the fence about the English course. I only took Comp I and II as a freshman so I guess I am going to have to figure out when to take another English. I guess I will be taking APII, his (for my major), English, and two philo classes.

Nice that you raised the GPA.....I went through something like that....at least now you see an end in sight.

So what classes are you taking now that will cause you to start in 2010?

Hopefully we will be in the same orientation class and will be to graduate in May 2010 as Grad Nurse if it is God's will.

I'm basically getting my pre-req sciences because LIU requires you to take two basic science classes if you don't have a science college course so I had to do those. I'm taking Anatomy, Micro, stats and psych in the fall and then physiology, organic chem and sociology in the spring and I'll be done with all my classes thank god. Those general ed courses seem like they took forever.

Just bumping for responses

hi i have a question, im currently a student at a cuny school which i do not like so im trying to transfer to liu or another cuny school any advice.

another option i have is to take my pre-request at a cuny and then transfer, but im scared if liu will take any of the classes i have taken.

Also what is Chem 3x or 4x at liu

Well I am attending Lehman at this point as a full time student. I know that Chem3x and 4x are equal to Chem114/115 and Chem 120/121 at Lehman. If I were you I would take all your a cuny school and then transfer to LIU just to save money. That is what I am doing. IU am applying for Fall 2010. If I get in all I would have to do is complete my prereqs over the summer and hopefully I will be able to complete clinicals in the Fall.

Just make sure that you keep both you overall GPA and science GPA over 2.75.

im currently at lehman as well. but i checked liu course list and chem 3x is general chem while chem 4x is organic. i dont know if im mistaken or not.

Chem114/115 is General Chem plus lab. Chem 120/121 is Organic Chem plus lab. I have asked the nursing dept at LIU about this and those are the proper classes.

Have you started any of the prereqs yet?

Hey guys I just graduated from LIU's school of nursing and while your concerns are correct, you guys also need to be preparing for the entrance exam and possible wait list. You guys should be calling nursing advisement for the best time to send your paperwork over because if you wait too late, you will be waitlisted at least 1 semester. The entrance exam has gotten tougher recently, I believe they are using Hesi for entrance to the school of nursing so over the summer, I'd purchase a nursing school entrance exam book to review or ask advisement what review books they recommend. It was really easy when I took it about 3 years ago, but they've made it tougher. They also recently got a new curriculum, which is really tough so be prepared emotionally, physically, and mentally. You're only going to get one semester of pharm, and one semester of patho so it's a lot of info to cram. You must past your med math each semester with 100. They give you 3 chances to get it, if not, you're held back and can't progress to the next level. In your last semester you get 13 tries to get 2 100's without a calculator. The minimum you're allowed to get in any nursing class is C+. If you get below C+ in 2 classes whether it be in the same semester or in different semesters, you're dismissed from the school. I'm not going to sugar coat it, it's extremely difficult and the pressure is insane. Every single week I had an exam in a different class at 8 a.m. That cut back a bit in my last semester but like I said, they've introduced a new curriculum.

All in all, it's a good place to be and the new curriculum is really preparing students for exit hesi (which is the 2nd worst exam you'll ever take next to NCLEX). I'm just telling you like it is because when I entered LIU's school of nursing I had no idea how hard it was going to be and I wish someone had warned me.

My advice is find your study buddies, make friends, ASAP. You're going to need the support to rely on. I couldn't have made it through nursing school without my girls. There will be a lot of tears, and a lot of disappointments but with a great support system from your fellow classmates, friends, and family, it's all possible.

Good luck!

Oh and chem 3x and 4x is just regular chem only thing is that it's not accepted by other universities. I hear its slightly easier than regular chem 3 and chem 4 which requires pre cal as a pre or corequisite.

ok thank you,i have taken some pre-request but still need more. i planning on transfering to hunter next semester cuz i dont like lehman. but to u think liu has a waiting list because i dont wanna waste any time. thanks
