Newark Beth Israel Hospital

U.S.A. New Jersey

Hello

I have been offered a position at Newark Beth Israel and was wondering if anyone has worked there. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I work at NBIMC. I started last year as a new grad and make $29.71/hr plus I work nights and make night shift diff. So I make about $33/hr. And when ever I get pulled I get pull pay at an extra $1.00 more an hr, so If I am working that night, get pulled to another floor I make $34/hr.

Let me just say, I moved from Philadelphia,PA to NYC (Staten Island) last year after graduating Nursing School and passing the boards in July 07. I applied to every hosp. in the Staten Island area, I did not want to work in NYC so applied to NJ hosp. in the area. I applied to Robert Wood, Bayshore, Jersey Shore Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel, St.Barnabas and UMDNJ. The ONLY hosp. that gave me an interview was Newark Beth.

I knew I wanted to work telemetry. And since Newark Beth offered me the position in Interventional Cardiology I accepted. I knew the reputation the hosp. had as a major teaching hosp. and was a part of the St.Barnabas healthcare network. I did a ton of research on the hosp. I was also told by one of my mom's client's (my parents own a business in philly), who did his MD residency at NBIMC but was from Philly, that once you work at 'The Beth" you can get a job anywhere. At times it's chaotic and like H** but once you have worked there, you can work anywhere.

So I was prepared with his advice. I was familiar with the area b/c my fiance is from Glen Ridge, where his parents live, but my fiance and I live in NYC b/c he is a police officer for the NYPD, and we have been together for 6 years, and I had been comming up from Philly every weeknd to see him for the last 5 years and knew that Newark was the way it was, no big suprise for me. Plus I grew up near Chester,PA which is like Newark,NJ. I had clinicals in Chester,PA Hospitals similar to NBIMC, I had Clinicals in West Philly Hospitals the worst of the worst, and clinicals in Phila. hospitlals. So I was prepared.

BUT what I didn't know, was how many of the area hospitals around Newark were closing last year in 2007 when I was hired. It was one right after another. Leaving only NBIMC, UMDNJ, and East Orange General for pt.'s to go to.

We are bombarded with cardiac pt.'s. All the area hosp. sent cardiac pt's to us..JFK,UMDNJ,St.Barnabas of all places, Jersey Shore Medical Center, Commnity Hosp, East Orange, even Staten Island University MC, and even a few from Mt.Siani ect..

Newark Beth has a good preceptor program, but you learn from exp. at this hospital. It does get chaotic, and out of controll, but that's where you develop your skills, as much as I HATE IT, I LOVE IT at the same time. I have been told that One year exp. at "The Beth" is equal to 3 years exp. at a regular hosp. and I think I am living proof of that.

What type of unit offered you the job? I have friends that are RN's that work in all areas, ER, Mother Baby, CCU, Step-down, CTOR, OR, Cath Lab, Psych, Med-Surg, ICU, CCU, I my self work Interventional Cardiology/CCU Step-down. It's crazy, and you are def. pushed to the limit but you become a better nurse.

If you accept the postiton contact me. I can help you with anything you need, it's a great place to have your first year exp. as an RN. I will be honest I hate it at times, but I also know that I am getting the best possible exp. I could have ever asked for as a new RN. I have been there almost a year as a new RN, 11 months to be exact. And I am teaching new RN's all the time and know what I have learned at Newark Beth, is unlike anything I could have ever asked for.

So good luck, and if you take the position, let me know, I can help you out. My name is Angie and I work on C4, night shift. And if I can;t help you i have many friends at Newark Beth that can!!!

Good Luck, and I hopefully look foward to working with you!!!

Hay Morettia...I graduated last year 2009 and haven't gotten a job until recently in March 2010. I had no idea it would take me so long to get a job. I work for a pediatric homecare agency but would really love to get hospital experience. Unfortunately hospitals are not looking to hire any new RN's at ALLLL!!!! with no experience, its almost like i have to lie which I hate doing!!! This is so depressing, not being able to find a hospital job because nursing home is the last place i want to work at! everyday I fill out applications online for the St.Barnabas Healthcare System esp Newark Beth Israel to no avail! I never get contacted and I call them over and over. Is there anything you can do to help me get a job there? i don't care where I start as long as I'm in there. Homecare is so boring to me and non-challenging that you cannot imagine! I want the stress and challenge of a hospital environment! please get back to me ASAP

Specializes in Emergency Department.

Hi everyone! Is anyone working at Newark Beth Israel in the Emergency Department? I was just offered a position and I'm starting February 28th! I'm really excited since this is my dream job!

Specializes in Correction.

@Rosie2903 what school graduate from?

Specializes in Emergency Department.

Felician College. I graduated in May 2010, however I had a hard time finding a full time position, it took me about 9 months and I was lucky enough to get into the ED! I've been working part time as a nursing instructor for an LPN to RN program since September and I think I'm going to continue that also. Are you a new grad?

Hi Rosie,

I am a (new) grad. I graduated in May 2010 also and have not found a position in a hospital. I applied relentlessly to St. Barnabus system but you know...nothing. Anyway, I work for pediatric homecare agency and also another agency doing assessments for their new incoming clients. I just had a phone interview for a LPN - RN school. Would you mind giving me any info on the one you are working at?

Thanks,

Jen

Are you looking for a school or a job? If you don't mind working at the county Jails, you can apply there. They hire LPN's and new grads.

Hi I am looking for work in the hospitals. I am currently doing pediatric homecare. I had an interview w/one correctional facility, but did not get it. That was last year sometime. I had a phone interview with to work as an instructor for an LPN to RN program. But I really would like to get acute care experience.

Thanks,

Jen

Specializes in PICU, Sedation/Radiology, PACU.

I just accepted a position in the PICU at NBI. I'm a new grad, so it's possible to get in- just don't give up!

I look forward to meeting the nurses there!

That is awesome as I have put in about 200 apps to the St. Barnabus system as a whole w/o a response. I wish you success in your new position.

Thank you. All I can say is be persistent. I think timing is key. The recruiter told me that he selected my application from the people that had applied most recently. I applied for the job online five hours before he called me, so I was definately one of the most recent. Keep trying and good luck!

Specializes in Med-Surg.

ashepherd, congratulations! Did you take and pass your boards already, or are you still waiting to sit for them?
