New Grad desperate to work!!

U.S.A. New Jersey

Hey guys I graduated Nursing school in december and I passed my boards in feb. I have been looking and applying for jobs ever since and no one has called me for an interview. I've applied to over 30 positions! I'm really passionate about maternal child care, NICU, and peds but no one wants to give me an opportunity because I dont have experience. I am willing to take med surg or tele to get experience and then transfer to peds. Does anyone know hospitals hiring new grads currently? or hospitals hiring new grads that have peds in their hospitals? I'm so lost and i dono what else to do...any advice would be of greate help. thanx!!!

I have to concur with waitingforthedream, applying online is a complete waste. I applied for 30 jobs in the past month and in one day all my applications were deleted and the jobs were still posted as open positions. Many places tell you straight off that they're not taking on new grads at this time. The reasoning from many recruiters I've spoken to is that it cost more money to train a new grad and older nurses aren't retiring right now bc of the economy. Add that to the fact that many hospitals have PCAs in nursing school that the hospital is paying for and it gets much harder for external candidates to be considered for open positions.

On another post I saw someone said that recruiters don't like to consider new grads that have been out of school more than 6 months bc they're out of clinical practice too long. I graduated in December and passed my boards in March. I'll be out of school 6 months next month but with no hospitals really hiring I don't know what I'll do. Guess I'll just keep applying and making contacts where I can.

Hey JerzeeMike,

I am on the same boat....I apply and follow up almost everyday....I'm out of ideas of what to do because when I go to drop off cover letters and resumes they turn me away just as fast or dont let me talk to the nurse recruiter. Im looking into NY hospitals, hopefully they have more opportunities and are willing to take on a new grad. This whole thing is like a nightmare, I never imagined it would be this difficult....and im truly shocked when they say they wont take u being out of school for more than 6 months...i donno what else to do.

Hey guys..I'm starting nursing school in the fall and hoping this economy picks up by 2011! I know some of you have families and such..but have any of you considered applying out of state? I heard that some states like Texas are still welcoming new grads.

I'm not in your shoes so I can't really speak..but I think I would try to go somewhere..ANYWHERE..and get a year's experience. After that year..you can always move back home..and by then..you'll have experience under your belt.

Just a suggestion!

Ouch!! I just received 12, count 'em 12, rejection emails from Somerset Medical Center. Every one of them said the same thing, "Although we were impressed with your skills and credentials, we have decided to pursue other applicants who more closely reflect the needs of this position.

We enccourage you to apply for future openings. Please visit our website at www.somersetmedicalcenter.com." Translation: New grads need not apply.

On the plus side, I have an interview with a Critical Care Transport company Monday morning. I'm an NJ EMT and have worked critical care transport as such. Hopefully that and working in the ER as a tech for 8 years will convince them I have what it takes to do this job. Wish me luck everyone.

Good Luck, you got this one. I got you beat, I have 17 rejection letters from Kennedy. All saying "Not selected", gosh thanks for giving me a chance! But thats okay, someone believed in my skills and I start Monday. It's their loss, right. Let us know how you make out!

Well, I didn't have the experience for the critical care transport nurse job. After discussing it with their nurse manager I have to agree. Maybe in a few years but for now I'd rather not have a patient code in the back of an ambulance and me being the only nurse there. She was extremely cool to talk to and gave me great advice.

Good news to report though. I interviewed with a rehab facility near my home and I accepted a full-time position as an RN there. I start June 15th and I already have a pre-employment physical scheduled. I'm over the moon with excitement and the facility is beautiful too. It's only about 8 years old so the facility is modern and beautiful. The commute is 15-20 mins from my house and the DON and HR rep were wonderful to interview with. Everything about this job works for me; pay, hours, commute-it's all good!! Wish me luck, everyone.

Good for you, great news! It was a rehab center acute care hospital that hired me too.

They were looking for 2 years experience d/t the fact that it was acute care rehab, but HR loved my interview and made an offer to me the next day. Good Luck to you, keep in touch. I just finished orientation and start my preceptership tonight (11-7).
