CSN RN Spring 2013

U.S.A. Nevada

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and I was wondering if there are any fellow CSN RN Spring '13 hopefuls out there. I just turned in my application today and I would love to get to know some of my potential classmates through this forum :)

I ran into a gal at work who was in uniform for the RN program. I approached her and told her I was a hopeful and we had a pretty interesting chat. She told me that she received her acceptance call on the 17th of October. That would be next week!

Also, she told me about the dosage calculations exam. You have to pass it or else be kicked out of the program and they only give you two attempts to pass. She also shared that there is a class in December called "Tool Box" that is really helpful in preparing for the exam and highly recommended signing up for that.

Just thought I would share. The waiting is still torture but I'm praying it will be over next week :)

I would not count on next week only because every semester is different. :) That said, it would be awesome if they made the calls next week. The dosage calculation test is not super hard unless you just don't understand algebra. That test is given only after they teach you how to do it the entire week. I think we all need to calm down and just focus on getting a call first before we get all crazy about the dosage calculations test. I was in the program before so I am telling you that you can do it. It is nothing more than algebra, and they go over it with you all week long. You all have done well this far so have faith in yourselves! :)

Regardless when you start nursing school, you'll have to deal with dosage calc every semester until you graduate. All the way throughout your RN career actually, you'll be doing dosage calc, infusion rates, etc whenever you pass meds. Also, it's not an entire week that they will teach you, it's only about 1-2 hours during one class and it's more of a review of homework answers. It's expected that you know how to do the math already. It's not the only the calculation and conversion (which are pretty simple), it's knowing how to read and interpret word problems/drug labels and picking out the right numbers and measurements to use. I heard 5 or so people didn't pass their dosage calc this semester and that was 4 weeks into the program already, imagine the time and money already spent with books, immunizations, tuition etc, only to stumble on the dosage calc...

I agree with yb0978. One thing at a time... I will never forget the way I felt when I took Bio189 and all we heard for the first half of the semester was basically, "you are going to fail". It would be great to only concentrate on the good things for now. We have worked hard to get where we are and a little bit of math shouldn't scare us into feeling that way again.

A bit of a tiny update. I work with someone who is going into the Spring 2013 RN bridge program and I asked her if she has an orientation and she said, maybe. The school told her last week the orientation date has not been set yet and they would notify her via email. This could be a totally different orientation because she is already a LPN. A little interesting all the same.

I have news.... I have class tonight so I stopped by the Health Advising Office at Cheyenne Campus. That office was not even aware that there was an extenion offered on the applications so she didn't know how many total were being considered.

First the good news - Eveyone who applied before the deadline will be considered first. Meaning there will be two piles of applications the people who submitted before the deadline will be given the go ahead first and the people who submitted after Sept. 1st will be considered last.

Second the bad news - The person who coordinates the applications will be out all next week and the selection committee won't meet until after she returns. The advisor said it is a quick process though for committee selection so it's not a long drawn out process. They are probably getting as tired of us calling and inquiring as we are waiting so I am sure they want to let us know too as soon as possible.

Based on this new information it will probably won't be until after the 24th that any calls are made. The advisor also told me technically they don't have to make the calls until 30-45 days after the extension deadline. However, when I spoke with the LE office at Charleston she told me for sure we would hear before the end of the month.

My head was spinning with all the new information so if I can think of anything else I'll post later. If anyone else hears anything please post and let us all know.

I've been in Zion for 2 days and I was going crazy with no internet....there's so much new information!!! Well I guess we will all have to continue to be patient! It will be worth it in the end :)

Does anyone know if the nursing students are required to get a flu vaccination? It is not on the requirments list, but you never know how up to date that may be. They offer it for free at work and I would rather get it now than have to pay for it later.

Flu vaccine is not required, but it's a good idea to get it, especially if you can get it for free. :)

I just had a bout of colds, got it from my lab partner, good thing it did not worsen and I was able to attend my clinical day last week.

Hi again...I have gone a whole week with out obsessing over not getting the call yet...I feel like I should get a chip like they do in AA...j/k...So i have another question regarding the immunizations...I have received all of the shots including the Hep series but I have no documentation to prove it...does anyone know about how much it costs to get the titer lab run? Also where I would be able to do that?

Good job with not obsessing! I can't say the same for myself. I still freak out every time I hear my phone ring, even though there is little chance that we will hear this week!

I had my titers done and I went to a regular lab (Labcorp) because I needed my other labs done as well. I'm waiting for a hefty bill because my insurance does not cover it. I have heard that The Vaccine Center (the only one I know of is on Windmill & Bermuda) is cheaper. I would inquire with them! I wasn't thinking about a bill when I asked my doctor to order the titers. I was only thinking about only getting one blood draw :p and now I'm dreading the bill!

Hello just reading through all this info. Thanks everyone for sharing! I also wanted to let everyone know that you can have your doctor order your titers at CPL lab. They have very low cash prices! It was only $35 for the varicella versus $200+ for the vaccines. Hope we all get good news soon!

I'm so nervous I think I am going to throw up. Ugh.... I wish November was already here.....:scrying:
