Low Score on Kaplan = NCLEX Fail?

Nursing Students NCLEX

I need some Good Advice.

I'm taking NCLEX PN next Saturday for 2nd time. I have been scoring @ 50%-55% on the Kaplan Q trainer questions.

I understand from other posts that if you need to score 70% or better to feel confident on passing NCLEX.

With 7 days left what can I do to improve it to 70%. I've done 2,400 que's on Saunder 4/ed. Went thru the whole book did the hardcopy questions. I did kaplans strategy book. I've gone over the mnenomics, normal lab values. Am reading the lacharity Prioritization book.

I feel very depressed and desperate to tell you the truth. I am mentally exhausted.

I've been studying since late Feb. for this.

What can i DO TO bring up my scores? Go over the missed questions content is the best thing I can think of.

I was told in my Kaplan class that a 60% is indicative of passing the NCLEX. I was also told that you should be doing around 90% of the total QBank questions.

I don't think you are that far off from where you need to be. The biggest challenge for most people IMHO is that they should be confident in their knowledge by the time they walk into take the test.

I took the test on Saturday and had taken the entire week prior to testing for study time. I even took my son to daycare M~Th to start studying in the morning. By Wednesday afternoon, I had taken the test trainer 1~5 and only did 40% of the QBank and I was just sick of studying.

So, from Wednesday on, I just relaxed and read novels (I read about one a day) and watched DVDs that I have been wanting to watch. I also watched the entire Season 2 of True Blood, the new season of Spartacus, etc.

IOW, I put the NCLEX completely out of my mind - and it worked.

Trust in yourself. If you have applied yourself throughout NS, then you will pass.

Lastly, please don't start a "I failed NCLEX for the nth time thread" if you fail again. I really don't think we need another one.

Good luck.

Thanks for the good, detailed advice. I think I would be under heavy med's if it got to nth time.. I know, I read them too. You never know what that person has gone through tho. so I try not to judge too much.

Hey again we,

As I posted before I scored mid-50s to mid-70s using Kaplan & failed twice. Ditched Kaplan totally, used Davis Q&A 2010, PDA, and the IC mnemonic and passed. STOP relying on test scores to determine if you're ready! You will NEVER be 100% ready! NOBODY has been/is/will ever be 100% ready!

Rest assured that you have core knowledge. Continue to answer questions and don't get bogged down if you get them wrong. Understand why the correct answer is correct and why the incorrect answers are incorrect. You are doing yourself a great disservice by being "depressed & desperate." That is the exact mentality that will cause you to fail.

I don't intend to sound mean (and I'm not being mean), but you HAVE to get into the right frame of mind to pass this test. Many times people need to be slapped around into that frame of mind.

I'm reminded of that awesome scene in "Empire Strikes Back" where Yoda uses The Force & lifts Luke's X-Wing out of the swamp. Luke walks over to him and says "I don't...I don't believe it." And Yoda replies, "That is why you fail."

You must believe that you will pass NCLEX. You've done the work (studying). Get into that positive attitude and nothing will stop you. All the best!

Another thing to piggyback on what uaefan said, be positive. I had post-it note all over the house and on my computer monitors that said, "I WILL PASS!". I also went to bed every night and woke up every morning with the mantra, "I WILL PASS!"

Thank you for the good advice. I have a lot of other personal things I'm juggling that's creating xtra pressure. Thxs again!!:up:

I understand. I had to resolve EIGHT non-NCLEX related issues in my life before I tested & passed on the 3rd time...not to mention taking a year and a half to do so. It sounds as though you've prepared well enough, but don't let those other issues cloud the importance of going into NCLEX with your head held high and a positive attitude. If you need to take time to resolve them, do it. Or if you can't/don't want to, don't.

I can't tell you what to do...but one indisputable thing I can tell you to do is to let everything go except knowing you will pass NCLEX, even if it's just on that day you take it. You can always juggle your other stuff the day after and beyond. But this is the test allows you to practice nursing (I know you know that, but). Anyway, I'm definitely keeping you in my thoughts. You'll do just fine...not only on NCLEX, but in your nursing career. All the best!

i wouldnt put too much into the scoring, just get familiar with how kaplan ask questions because i think they are similar to nclex questions. i did kaplan nclex trainer questions and wrote down answers to the questions i missed and made sure i knew why i missed the questions. and my scores on the nclex trainer questions varied from high to low
