Hi -

I am thinking about applying for SLU's Accelerated Generalist Masters of Nursing for this upcoming fall (2014). It's fast approaching and I need advice about the program, the Saint Louis area, and the degree. I have done a lot of research but it would be great to get other people's opinions of SLU Nursing and to know what the program was like. Also, what kind of jobs would one start in with the degree from here? Where do people live?

I'm finishing my BS in Public Health and Psychology from Arizona this May so it would be a quick transition to SLU for the fall. Any comments or information would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

I applied to the program and was accepted for Fall 2014. I have tried to get information myself to no avail. However, I plan on attending. At graduation and after taking the NCLEX, you could get a job at the bedside like a regular new RN would. The difference is that having the Generalist Masters means that you can move up the job ladder quicker and that if you want to go back to grad school to specialize you might have less classes due to the fact that you have taken some grad courses already. Plus you get to take the CNL exam after graduation. I am fully ok with going this route. I am not sure which nursing area I want to specialize in ( CRNA, or acute adult NP) and I did not want to enter a direct entry-NP program where I would have to specialize immediately. I am quite ok with working by the bedside 2-3 years after graduation. I plan on working in critical care areas anyway so the longer I stay by the bedside the better.

Look up some previous posts under "SLU AGMSN" and read the posts and try to PM anyone to see if you get a response. I got a response from one present student.

I am trying to decide if I should apply for this upcoming year. So one is awarded an MSN and then can sit for the CNL certification - since it is an MSN we are then able to go to NP school once we get more experience, correct?

I'm in the middle of comparing a program that awards a MS-RN and SLU's program - I am leaning towards SLU since we actuyally receive a Master's of Nursing as well as a CNL certificate

Yes, from my understanding once you get more experience you can attend a NP program after you gain more experience. I would say apply to both programs. If you get into both then you can make a final decision. I had only applied to two schools. Last year I got into an ABSN program in the NY metro area( where I live) but I deferred attending until Fall 2014. In November, I applied to the program at SLU and received admission in January. I decided to go to SLU because I could not fathom paying $50,000+ for another BS degree. I would rather spend that kind of money on a masters degree. I was going to apply to another program like SLU that was located near Chicago but I decided to go to SLU for a number of reasons.

One last thing, how long was your personal statement? From what I can find on SLU's website, it is pretty open ended so I just wanted to see what you're thoughts were.

My personal statement was 2 pages double spaced. If you want to know how many words ...708 to be exact. Yeah, I thought the requirements for the essay were a bit open ended as well. I just focused on the reason why I wanted to become a nurse ( in particular a CNL), where I saw myself in five years after being a nurse, and why the program at SLU was a great fit for me.

Hello everyone,

I was accepted into the program also for Fall 2013 but then had to defer. I have visited the city several times and the campus is beautiful. I am excited about the program also. From my interaction with the admissions department they are very nice and helpful. One advise I will give is to look for housing early on. They have a lot of lofts that are reasonably priced if you can get a special.

Congrats! I'm finishing up my application now!

Did you guys get letters of rec's from employers, teachers, etc.? Since we only submit 2, I am trying to figure out which letters would be best to have submitted.

Ok, I have three people with letters of rec: an academic adviser, my current CNA job "manager," and my internship at Susan G. Komen adviser.

I have been at SGK the longest so she would write a great letter, but who would you guys recommend I use for the second?

I have only been at the CNA job for a little over a month but it has to do with healthcare so I am not sure if I should just use it anyways!

Hi,

Just checking to see if you were accepted in the program for Fall 2014. I noticed that the school has an active waiting list now but the deadline for applications is July.
