Is anyone aware of new grad programs in the NICUs in the St. Louis area? This is an area I've kicked around looking in to for the future and I've been reading on the NICU forums that this is an area that particularly likes to hire new grads.

I figure that Children's and Cardinal Glennon each have one, and I believe St. John's does also. Is anyone aware of other facilities locally with NICUs?

Does anyone know if they allow shadowing?!?! And whom I could contact to set this up?!?!?

Thx-

You are right about Glennon and SLCH having NICU. Saint John's has a large NICU as well as special care nusing floor for newborns. I am not sure about which hospitals have shadowing, but if you call their HR departments they may be able to help. I know that SLCH has a externship program, but I do not know how to apply for it.

As far as level III NICU's go, I think that the only three are Children's, Glennon, and St. John's. There are probably level II's out there as well, but I couldn't even begin to tell you how to find them. I know Barnes had a level II (sometimes called special care nurseries).

St. John's and Children's definitely allow shadowing. I bet that Glennon does as well. You would probably set it up with recruitment. A couple gals I went to school with shadowed at St. John's, and when we went for clinical orientation at Children's, someone (betting on a nurse recruiter) gave us all a packet from the hospital that included a form to fill out if we wanted to shadow.

Glennon hired about 5-6 gals from my graduating class for their NICU. They LOVE to hire new grads at Glennon, in pretty much any department.

Thanks for this info (and the encouragement!!). I did an internship through SSM this summer and they're definitely very student-friendly!

We do a 3-week peds rotation this upcoming semester, so hopefully I'll meet someone to get more info from. If we don't get info such as you mention during orientation there, I'll be sure to follow up with someone there.

Right now, I'm trying to get mentally ready to go back this semester -- UGH!!

St. John's has a NICU fellowship they offer twice a year but it's small. I interviewed for it and they only took 5-6 people. SLCH and Glennon only have externship programs while your're a student nurse, which would be smart because then they'd probably hire you on after that. I'd also apply early before graduating because I applied and called 2 months before graduating in June and was told they'd already reached their new grad quota for the NICU at SLCH and Glennon. Hope this helps!

Tremendously!! I'll try to start making some contacts soon and keeping my eyes on their websites for externships, etc.

Thanks again!!

We have one at CGHC. Great experience there. I got pulled down to the NICU once and it was pretty neat and the nurses are all very helpful towards one-another.
