Feeding GI contents to combat alkalosis

Hi all!

I am commenting on a discussion r/t alkalosis for my graduate APRN class. I want to write about the practice of returning gastic contents to the stomach (originally removed via GT to LWS, etc), to help combat alkalosis, but I am not coming up with appropriate search terms/phrases when looking for literature to back this up.

Does anyone have some ideas? I'd also like to know more about this practice! I'm out of the SICU for school or else I'd be asking my peers.

Thanks!

your practice is a joke............

are you kidding me? the op came for infomration about a possible solution for a real problem, and all you can do it belittle her and try and make her feel stupid. i think a sincere apology is in order...otherwise, your post is just a joke.

I'm sorry, I can't really come up with any search terms that may help you, but...

I know that we return gastric contents when checking residuals in order to protect the stomach lining from bacteria as the acid that you are removing when checking residuals kills it. However when NGT is hooked up to suction, it seems to be completely counter-intuitive to return those contents that you are sucking out...there is a reason you are removing it in the first place. I'd be interested to hear more on this topic if you find any good research..good luck!

I wonder if you could look at the references for AACNs guide to placement of OG/NG tubes. Some of those articles or other articles by the same authors may be helpful.
