Congratulations whosurdaddy on your first job! And many thanks to you, wendyvonne and all the others who have freely offered their advice and responded to all our questions. I really appreciate it. 141 promises to be challenging and I'm alternately excited and depressed thinking of all the work that lies before me. But mostly excited (I'm so naive, I know).

LOL!
I always look back and laugh about how naive i was, while I knew school would be hard I was not prepared for the politics of nursing school. you will learn so much over the next year. some of it you will wish you hadnt. especially in lab
my best advice to all newbees is study your meds..........find some way to memorize them. Knowing your medications is 1/2 the battle on your tests. not so much in foundations cause you dont get to pass meds in foundations but its never to early to start. right now your life is getting more and more hectic, seems like there isnt even time to breathe, but if you have even a few extra minutes a day take time and study some meds from pharm. Your prof's will expect you to remember everything youve ever studied and it makes all fair game on upcoming tests. You cant say hey thats not fair that was a question from pharm.
class of 2014 your time is now
good luck

Whosurdaddy & Quarterlife,
We are always hearing how mean/hard on us the instructors can be so I am kind of scared of them, though most of them seem nice so far (its only been a week, lol.) Anyway, we were in lab the other day in mini groups with an instructor who was just going over some general info, asking us questions, etc. No real work yet. Anyway, the instructor asked my group if any of us have worked in health care and I said that I was a PCA (the only one in the group.) Now Im paranoid that maybe I made a mistake and that it might be better to keep this to myself. I dont want to give them any reason to have it out for me. Im not one of those know-it-all types but Im afraid they will think that or expect me to do things perfectly right off. Have you seen this happen with any of your classmates?
P.s. Congrats and Gook luck in the job, Whosurdaddy! :w00t:
Allright fellow 1st years, current 2nd years and graduates still checking in, how do I improve my short term memory? Honestly, while taking bp by the time I get the diastolic, I can't remember the systolic (same thing when I take radial pulse, then resp's - can't remember pulse, only resp). Probably stress and nerve-related but I feel like I'm losing my mind. We have our vital sign GAS next week and I'm so afraid I'm going to blank. Any tips for me?
Write them down as you're doing them. Or are we not allowed to? When I do vitals at work, I always write them down or I'll forget by the time I do each part.

in gas evaluations, they will give you a piece of paper to write down your results. As for the systolic/ diastolic readings. you can take the systolic write down the result, wait the 1 minute in between and take the diastolic. good luck!!

Hey Brodygirl,
What I do is when I get my systolic I say it out loud. That has really helped me. Also regarding the pulse and respirations I asked my lab instructor if we can separate the two and she said yes, so you can do radial pulse write it down and then do the respirations. They just want us to learn how to incorporate them together. So when we do the GAS, we can do it however we want :)
Can you plz clear your inbox... I am unable to send message. Thanks.
