Hey Everyone,

Davenport University has as everyone knows changed there Associate Nursing program is to now a

BSN degree program! No problems there! I am however taking a Biostatistics class. Then I am taking a Chemistry class in the Warren Location.

As well do I need to have all my prerequisites finished to even apply in Febuary?

Does anyone know how hard the admission process is for the BSN program at Davenport?

How competitive is it? What type of GPA? Essay Style? Any tips to help out? What score does my TEAS

need to be?

How is the Davenport Nursing Program? Would your recommend it to others?

Anytips?

As well where are most of the clinical sites for the nursing program?

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing your response.

Hey there Sante2487, I tranferred from Baker too. I'm currently taking Intermediate Algebra and Cell Biology. I took Chemistry, medical terminology, and Pharm at Baker but they didn't transfer. I'm scheduled to take Chemistry in the Fall. The Patho and Micro tranferred and I'm done with the Gen. Ed and the elective classes so I'm in pretty good shape, at least I thought I was. I was put on the traditional track. I can't figure out why, after this semester I will only need Chemistry. Am I missing something?

Promiseme1, I would assume maybe because Chemistry is a lab and a lecture and can be difficult for some people? I am not exactly sure. They might have just not wanted you to have a Chem lab/lect along with two other nursing class lab/lect plus clinicals.

I guess I just don't see how that could make you go an entire year longer though. I was accepted into the accelerated track... and I don't even see how all of the classes will be completed on time lol. I guess we will see!

I feel like they have a lot of people in different places as far as classes go, and that might be hard to coordinate everyone.

Do you guys get financial aid? I was also worried that because the high cost and having to take so many credits at a time that financial aid is not going to cover it all (through loans and grants). I am hoping it will maybe increase! All I know is I do not have a few grand each semester to pay extra so I hope that is not the case.

finally signed up for this site after scoping it out for a while. It was nice to see TWO people from my current Micro lab on here....the "old man" and the mom of two! :) This is the redhead that doesn't show up in shorts and a tank top! ;)

So...after having the orientation i still feel like they haven't answered all our questions, but i suppose it's because they don't KNOW yet. Not only is it new to us, but also to them.

Hopefully we can all get everything done before the August 1st deadline!! :)

See all of you in the Fall!

April

Your funny! I really wish they knew a little more. I just e-mailed the nursing administrative asst. to see about the Hep B, and I guess if you will not have all 3 doses done you have to have the physician sign something stating that and write them a letter with the dates that it will be completed. (Since they are administered over a 6 month period) She said to then follow up when it is finished.

Going to get my TB Wed... yuck! lol

I hope that they will possibly be adjusting the fast track so we will be doing a clinical sooner, possibly in the fall?

That would be nice.

Hi all,

I have been considering Davenport and wanted to get more information. I am pretty sure I have asked this before but trying to search through the thred to find the answer is nerve wracking! Anyhow, what are the pre req's required for Davenports program? And also what was the lowest gpa that was accepted? I will start applying to schools in the fall and I am getting really nervous with what to expect. I am hoping not to be flooded with rejection letters my first time out! I know a lot of people say the schools are getting harder and harder to get into so I am prepared if that is the case but I am hoping not! Any information you give would be greatly appreciated thanks so much!

Hey MsAshley,

I am not 100% positive on any of this, but from what i have heard:

There are no pre-requisites for the BSN and the LPN program. There is a small chance that you could be accepted into the nursing program straight from High School. Although, i would HIGHLY recommend taking the first year of classes ahead of time. Especially if you want any chance of making it into the fast track program. Those prerequisites are:

Foundations (basic) Biology, plus Biology Lab, Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, plus Labs, Chemistry Lecture and Lab, Composition 1 and 2, Intermediate Algebra, Intro to Psychology, Microbiology lecture plus Lab, Intercultural Communication, Intro to Health care and Biostatistics.

As for the lowest GPA, from what i have HEARD, there was a guy accepted with a 3.0, but...i know people with a 3.7 or higher that were NOT accepted. Davenport's program is NOT all based on GPA. We also had to have 2 professional recommendations, as well as a 450 word essay. This was on top of our GPA, prerequisites and TEAS (or Hesi) scores. I know that a previous degree also helped you reach the top of the list.

If you don't mind my asking, what is your education history? And what is your GPA? Have you taken the TEAS/HESI yet? if so, how did you do? Are you from the Warren area? Or the main campus (Grand Rapids) area? I am only telling you what i know of the Warren campus.

I know that MY GPA at DU was 4.0, with a 3.7 transfer GPA. It was slightly lower if you ONLY took the Math and Science classes, which they also look at.

Well, I wish you luck, and remember to keep your grades up! :)

Thanks so much for writing all of that! The good thing about Davenport is that there is no waiting list so I am happy for that. But that also means it is very competitive. Are you able to apply for both the RN and LPN program at the same time? I am willing to do the LPN if I am unable to get into an RN program just because I know I will be able to do an LPN-RN track somewhere and those are easier to get into but I would prefer just going straight RN.

As far as the classes, so far all I have taken is Comp 1 and 2, Bio, AP1 (currently taking), Intermediate math, and Intro to psych. I am scheduled to take both AP2 and Micro this fall. I am nervous about taking the two science classes together but I think if I try hard enough I can make it work.

I took the HESI in the beginning of this year and I got a 75% but mind you I had never taken an Anatomy or Chemistry class and both those sections were on the test. I scored in the low to high 90's on everything else so that should show you just how bad I bombed those. But I have taken Anatomy and Chemistry now so I think that I could do better this time around. I am going to make an appt to see an advisor so I can see what else I need to do. I also have great people to write recommendation letters for me so I am not worried about that at all.

Thanks again for your help and I will keep you posted as I go along. Hopefully I'll be a davenport nursing student next year!!

I also forgot to add this would be my first degree. I have a medical assistant certification and have been working for one of the health systems for about 2 years now. does the healthcare experience count at all?

MsAshley,

I am currently taking both Micro and A&PII at the same time...it is a lot, but it's definitely doable. I find myself in a bit of a mental stutter occasionally, trying to shift between two very different and yet overlapping types of biology.

As for the rest, April's advice is excellent. I am not sure whether medical experience is helpful or not. But to reiterate April's note: It seems like TEAS score, Essay and Recommendations were weighted a little more than GPA.

Got 4 shots, 4 tubes of blood taken and a bit of a shock to my lower GI today...this better be worth it.

Lol... all the pain will be worth it! I had to do everything we are required to do when starting at Beaumont as an NA, so it will be very helpful to have everything done!

Ms. Ashley- I personally think that for me the healthcare experience helped me out ALOT. I had a 3.71 at D

U and a lower transfer GPA from Wayne State. I actually had 1 C in one of the pre-reqs, so I did not think I would get in. My two letters were from my Clinical Nurse Manager at work and a Rapid Response RN at Beaumont. Make sure they write out and attach a longer reccommendation to the form DU gives you, I think that helped. I also wrote my essay on how the clinical experience has impacted me and a lot of personal experiences with patients. I am sure if you use your healthcare experience to you advantage it will def. help you out! Good Luck!

FYI to everyone starting this year- there are a ton of Littman as well as other good brands of stethoscopes on ebay for much cheaper. There is also some of the other supplies as well. It is worth checking out!
