How do you know if I am Gay or Straight?

Nurses Men

Hello Gentlemen, I have been reading posts on allnurses for a couple weeks and just today registered so could ask a question. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF I AM GAY OR STRAIGHT? I have been a little upset at the gaul of some posters to state "I don't know what you are talking about, we had 5 men in our class and none of them were gay", how do you know? Did the teacher ask for sexual orientation when she took roll? Did you all have name tags that said Gay or Straight? I am changing careers in my early 50's partly so I can work in a profession for the first time in my life that I thought it really didn't matter that I was gay. From what I am hearing I might as well go back into the Navy and their don't ask don't tell BS. And by the way, unless I want you to know that I am Gay, you will not figure it out on your own.

Great forum, just needed to get that off my chest.

I think this is a question which will be asked time and time again. Nursing traditionally used to have mostly gay guys in the male category. Things have changed alot in the last 20 years or so and many a straight male has been attracted to the profession for so many reasons (job stability, equitable, relatively good remuneration, benefits , great career paths etc). I work in what is considered a pretty "tough" field/ speciality in nursing (Flight nursing) where the majority of our nurses are guys. While straight guys outnumber the gay male nurses, the number of gay guys are still high. I think the biggest factor though is that there is mutual respect based on performance at work; how skilled you are, how good a clinician you are, how much of a team player you are. Those are the things that matter. All the gay/lesbian Flight nurses are out and not ashamed of who they are. This has fostered greater understanding and mutual respect for one another. I think the big thing depends on how comfortable one is with ones sexuality and how open one needs to be about it in the work setting.

With me ive had a few classmates ask if I had a GF.. even a coworker, I told them I'm single and uninterested. The coworker got her ear told off by me and thus my reply to this is usually "It shouldn't matter what my orientation is, I am here first and foremost to provide care for my patients and my personal life will not interfere with it. So stop bugging me and do your job!"

I don't know whether you are gay or straight, nor do I care. I'm at work to save babies, not looking for a date, so your sexual orientation is irrelevant to me.

I could care less if anyone is straight, gay or bi. Unless I"m sleeping with you I don't care. My 0.02 to anyone gay or otherwise; do your job. period. Being a great nurse isn't about your sexual orientation. I will add that I work with a person who is gay and DEMANDS to be "heard" and "understood" based on her being gay. I just walk away. I'm busy and have patients waiting. anyone not willing to listen for hours is then termed a "gay hater". I just giggle. again my thoughts: Who cares? just do your job.

cheers
