  1. Length of stay for c-sections?

Our policy is go home on 4th day post-op but most do go home on the third or even the second--this might be standard here in MN. The insurances tried the kick 'em out in 48 for vag. or 72 hrs for c/b but did not fly here...
  2. Funny Names for Nurses

Here we have Dr. Hackett, Urologist (who does vasectomies); we also have Dr. Love, a GP. Dr. Payne must have a HUGE family!! I see that name all the time! :)
  3. Nursing Superstitions!

When I was a unit secretary, everytime I worked with this one charge nurse, we ALWAYS had a post-partum hemorrhage! (I just got used to taking out the PPH box when I saw her name). And why is it that on a GYN floor when it is Q**** on Sundays, admitt...
  4. OT: Unit Secretary

It is a hard job to explain to people so I used to tell them that "do you know Radar O'Reilly from MASH? what he did is pretty much what I do"--Anyways, you run the desk!! you run the unit!! You put and take apart charts, transcribe DRs orders to med...
  5. OT: Unit Secretary

Yes, I was a Unit Sec. for 15 years before becoming a nurse---it has helped me greatly in the charge role--I can run the desk w/o my secretary (not that I want to, tho) when she is on break. Granted you do not get into patient care issues but a good...

  7. Honestly: Do you wear gloves every time?

I 99% of the time wear gloves for IM's and SQ's but the one time I didn't for an IM the patient bled like the dickens and the little alcohol pad I had didn't quite do it! LOL Why the gloves with meds, tho--I'm not actually touching anything of the p...
  8. DEBRIDE the SCABS

How interesting...Allina systems nurses voted today (they own the bulk of the health care in the Twin Cities) and one more hospital votes Sunday; otherwise all but three of the hospitals here averted a strike...so far. We'll all know by tommorow nig...
  9. Minnesota Nurses Voted!

Just got done talking w/ my Mom, an Allina RN who had told me about training in the replacements--Lucky for her they won't arrive until mid-week so she got out of it BUT the hospital where she works is closing down a 12-bed unit on Tues and reopen...
  10. Minnesota Nurses Voted!

JennyP and all other Twin Cities Nurses in the big "12"--My Mom is working this w/e at an Allina hospital and she tells me that she has to train in her replacement for next week!!! I told her to show them how the pumps work and how to get the meds o...
  11. Minnesota Nurses Voted!

Thank you all so much for clarifying what was said. This is a very emotional topic here in the Twin Cities and as we speak the "angry" nurses at my hospital are demanding a recount. So anyway you look at it, we have deffinately changed. Nurses are ...
  12. Minnesota Nurses Voted!

I work at the one hospital that broke the ranks and voted to ratify. My sister also works here and we went into the meeting knowing we would vote to strike. However, after listening to the settlement that this hospital offered and that they added l...
  13. New staffing model for m/b unit?!?!

Yes, "technically" we have the baby as a pt. BUT we still have a charge RN in the Nursery so if anything is askew we take it to them and they call docs, call NICU, put protocols into place i.e. cold stress, jittery, etc.. Becuz I also work charge in...
  14. and it looks like we will be voting to strike here in the Twin Cities--over 9,000 RN's, that is--so sad the hospitals never saw our value and only ofered us a paultry 18% over three years--that's like a $1.60 raise for me--WOW--Not even cost of livin...
  15. Sheehan's Syndrome after postpartum bleed

Wow--new to me, also!! How about this one--pt. at 20 weeks gest. in for hyperemisis, found on floor of her room, CT done of head to CYA and she was found to have a fast growing pit. tumor that killed her when that baby was four months old--SAD--becuz...
