    1) The word "breaching"!!! Patients have to stay in A + E for four hours then they get transferred to CDU, and if there are no beds available then there is a panic as the patient will "breach" the time and then hospital management get involved to fin...
  3. What Is Your Most Gross, Yucky, Disgusting Nursing Horror Story?

I can deal with almost anything but dirt and body odour. Strange I know. I remember one man who was picked up by the police and brought into the hospital. He lived on the street, and he was soooooo dirty. he had body lice and head lice. Although I wa...
  4. Male vs. Female

Unfortunately the female nurses are not allowed to catherise men on my ward even though it's an acute medical ward. But both sexes can catherise women, although most male nurses will ask a female nurse to do it for him if they are available.
  5. Dangers of nursing

The worst thing about nursing for me is that we have to document everything that happens, from when people have a go at us for whatever reason, if we bleep the doctors and they don't respond etc. It's like covering ourselves the whole time in case so...
  6. feeling overwhelmed?

I have been a registered nurse for nearly a year now, and I can assure you you will get through your training. Everyone has doubts, I had doubts after I qualified!!! It's only now that I feel at peace with myself. Although I didn't have a very good t...

  10. my feet are killing me!

Hi, Just wanted to say that we work 12 and a half hour shifts on my ward, plus the odd twilight(6pm to midnight), and some shorter shifts to make up the hours. You're feet will get used to it, believe me. Make sure you wear comfortable, breathable sh...
  11. Is this correct?

In the UK, you don't have to practice giving yourself injections. When I was a student we had to practice on oranges as they thought that the orange peel was similar to human skin!!!! Good luck with your studies!!
  12. Taking out the trash

Sorry!! But I would empty the rubbish bins if they were full, as health and safety comes into being here. The domestics are usually very good at doing this however at night they are not around so much so.........! I have no qualms about doing this.
  13. customer satisfaction in the er

CDU isn't like a Fast Trek. We deal with all sorts of problems, such as Cardiac, Respiratory, Overdoses, Gastro problems and everything else. We assess these patients and then transfer them to the appropiate ward. Well that's the theory behind it but...
  14. MOT sticker (important for car owners)

Thanks for notice, I had no idea that this was a legal requirement!! After my MOT last time, the mechanic gave me one of those but said it was up to me what I did with it!! So it went in the bin, as I always know when my MOT is due. You would have th...
  15. Joke.

A man went to his doctor complaining of a terrible pain in his elbow. After much prodding and bending the doctor said " I am unsure as to the cause of your pain, I'll have to refer you to a consultant. The only snag is, there is a 12 month waiting l...
