I graduated in 1982 and have never owned a nursing cap. Our nursing instructors said that they would not attend our pinning ceremony if we included capping and candle light vigil. They were very modern in their thinking and told us that both the ca...
In our CCU it takes approx. 5 minutes per patient. We normally have one or two patients, at the most three. We do a bedside report. We have a timeline sheet on the chart with a short H & P, diagnosis, MD's and what has happened since the patie...
Noone is taking the nursing shortage seriously! The public doesn't have a clue how bad it is going to be in about 10 years when us baby boomers retire. I believe we, as nurses, need to inform the public. Dateline, 20/20 or one of those shows had a...

I haven't iced cardiac output syringes for 16 years. We use a continuous system that has the D5W tubing and syringe all hooked up to the swan. We never have to disconnect anything.

I remember when MI patients couldn't have ice water, watch TV, read a newspaper. They had to have complete bed baths and use a bed pan. We also started Lido on every patient that had an MI. When the Swan Ganz catheter became popular, we would inj...

I think a sick policy with rewards rather than punishment would alleviate repeat offenders. Hospitals should give a person one added vacation day for every 3-6 months you go without calling in sick. Our hospital doesn't do this. Anyone work at a h...
I work in a 15 bed CIC and 6 bed CSU combined unit. We are supposed to have 9 nurses each noc. We have 5 core staff and 2 new regular staff. That's it folks. The rest are travellers. We have a couple of really good travellers, but some are the p...
Our hospital gave us these great plastic pens with RN on the cap. Their generosity never ends. One year, it was arranged for us to clean up a park across the street from the hospital. Needless to say, they never planned a day in the park again. O...
