One I was on the phone to a doctor serveral times. The patient wasn't doing well. The doc told me to dc the hemofiltration. I was totally unfamiliar with this and told him I didn't know how. And he said "Any idiot could do it". I replied, "We don't have any idiots working tonight, would you please come in?" I also wrote him up for being verbally abusive.

All he had to do was basically explain what he was talking about ,

I am so happy that your response was like it was. I will make a mental note and keep that one handy. Im glad to see your wrote him up, there was no need for his response to you. Your a professional , Nothing more , Nothing less. Dont you have it when they become so powerful in thier own minds.

There is no excuse for the physician's comments and I appreciated your retort. Still, I must wonder why you would be assigned a patient receiving hemofiltration when you clearly had not received adequate training to manage the equipment. Personally I would not have accepted such an assignment without possessing trouble shooting skills etc. let alone the knowledge of how to discontinue therapy.

You are kidding aren't you?

Once my agency sent me to a place that wanted to dump a 30-bed ward full of vents on my untrained self, and this fact was only casually mentioned during the course of report.

They then tried to say that I "accepted" the assignment because I "took" report, "and besides, there's a respiratory therapist on duty to help you."

I was on the phone to my agency in a heartbeat--and I very nearly dropped them as my agency because I had been very clear about my skills and the new manager hadn't bothered to check out my folder.

I got reassigned, but it took 2 hours.

Point: some people just want a warm body and will actively try to deceive you. And: In a lot of places, your basic training is not adequate for what will actually happen.

Excellent response! Maybe some of us aren't as quick thinking when these situations arise, but we all need to remember than NONE OF US EVER NEED TO TOLERATE THAT SORT OF ABUSE!!!!! Thank you for your fine example sjackson!!!!!

P.S.--didn't mean to "yell", but I feel REALLY strongly about nurses accepting anything thrown their way.......including crap from nasty docs......
