About kddannemiller

Originally from DFW, Texas, I moved to Louisiana with my husband in 2014. I worked for a major healthcare system in an Intensive Care Unit for about 2 years after graduating with my BS: Pre-Med and I LOVED it. Currently back to school to achieve my RN, BSN, and eventually I'd like to be a DNP or PhD.

  1. CRAZY / GROSS / NASTY

Vented patient that when cleaning stool off the tushy I tugged at some crusted blood and HUGE blood clots (I'm talking forearm size!) begin spilling out of the rectum (for about 1/2 hour). Pt had not previously been identified as a GI case. Holy frea...
  2. I would love some pointers on how to lobby for the state (Louisiana) to consider changing their nursing laws. I am also interested in what others' opinions are about the benefits and disadvantages of non-compact AND compact licenses. Please consider...
  3. Not sure where to start?

I agree with your counselor and the two previous commenters. I would take the CNA course and try to get a job at your desired hospital, if possible. Start taking nursing prerequisites at your local community college (CCs are SOOO much cheaper than un...
  4. How far do you drive to work?

  5. Charge nurse/ years of experience

Where I previously worked (16 bed ICU), RNs could charge with 1 year experience. Small pay bump, and usually charge did not take patients unless we were short-staffed. Not sure about my new hospital though, I moved out of state and don't I start for ...
  6. Comfortable shoes?

When I first was hired, I was "not going to wear those stupid, expensive, Croc-looking clogs." After about 6 months, a friend literally made me borrow her Danskos. I have 3 bad discs in my lumbar spine, and wonky hips from 15+ years of gymnastics......
  7. To blood sugar or not to blood sugar. That is the question.

I worked in an ICU as an NA for almost 2 years and we took accuchecks when patient went on tube feeding, and 6 hours after starting. If BG was less than 120, no further testing. Over 120, continue testing 2x q6. Under 150, DC blood sugars. Granted, o...
  8. @plinythern Do you still work at OLOLRMC? I have been accepted to nursing school at OLOL college for Fall 2015 and have previous experience working as a ICU nurse aid and US.... I have been looking for part time nurse tech or US positions in the ICU ...

  10. Nurse Tech in ICU

Wayne, I originally applied for a night shift PCU US, but when I got in for the face-to-face interview I expressed that I was open to other shifts, units, more job titles, etc. My manager was over both the cardiac PCU and the ICU (it was a 16 bed ICU...
