Convince your Non Party state to endorse Compact Licensures

Published

I would love some pointers on how to lobby for the state (Louisiana) to consider changing their nursing laws. I am also interested in what others' opinions are about the benefits and disadvantages of non-compact AND compact licenses.

Please consider that I know that Louisiana has no intention of changing anytime soon.

- I know the state BON would lose money due to the loss of fees they instill on LA RNs applying for state licensure.

- I am fully aware that it would make disciplanary actions more difficult for the LSBN to control if a nurse possessed a compact licensure from a different "home" state.

- I know LA likes to think their criminal background checks are much more stringent than other states.

However, I feel like a compact licensure would benefit the state in the following ways:

- As a "high risk" state for natural disasters (Hurricanes anyone??) in times of emergency, participating in a compact licensure would allow significantly faster relief for the hospitals and clinics around the state.

- Participating in compact licensure would ensure quality providers during these times of need.

- Many neighboring states are party participants... Allowing compact licensure would benefit the "good neighbor" mentality that Louisiana is known for.

(I am aware I am bias because I love both Louisiana and Texas and would love the freedom of my friends and I to practice freely through both states.)

Many times, in cases of disaster, states will off conditional licensure to nurses there to help. I remember NY doing this after 9/11.

If you're not familiar with the story, Google "Charles Cullen." Good example of why states need to exercise caution. I do think they should offer a reduced charge for nurses who were first licensed in another state.
