   also i pt came into the ED awake and alert give the intake nurse the grandchild as emegency contact

   It was for emergency dialysis pt was intubated and comatose. The daughter could not be reached at the time. The employee was not on duty at the time. Yet was call into the hospital as an emergency contact.

   that is not true the pt can die from not being suctioned....if a tracheostomy pt do not get suctioned as needed they can mucus plugged causing total occlusion of the air way and die. Any pt that has trouble clearing there own airway or has aspirated...

   as respiratory i feel that any patient that has aspiration precautions, seizers, tracheostomy, and/or a peg tube or NG tube should have some sort of suction at the bedside its obvious that thees sort of patient have trouble or can not clear their own...

   if a adult grandchild is a current employee of the hospital can they sign consent for medical care if they are not next of kin and would this be considered a HIPAA violation
