Terminated 15 mins after state left

Hello to all. I'm still a bit bruised and still up, not able to sleep after what just took place two days ago. I have been working as MDS coordinator for a swing bed LTAC facility and 15 minutes after state left out the door and the announcement was made that we met 100% compliance and all was good, I was called into admin office and termed effective immediately. I am absolutely blindsided by this. When I was hired in, the facility was in such a clinical and charting situational mess. All was cleared up and care plans and MDS were now right and proper. The calculated timing of having me there full time and especially having me there during state survey to be in compliance and then literally walking me to the time clock within minutes after state left, handing over my badge and keys was a deplorable act beyond the beyonds in their handling of me. I couldn't even save the section C I was on and shut the computer down. They didn't even allow me to show them the care plan I had printed off sitting there, that they stated I had not even done or completed on due date (which they stated is the reason for immediate dismisal) It was sitting right there in the office. Due date post admit on the care plan was the very day I was terminated. I'm speachless and really distraught over this. Now I realize why they hired me full time and had it in mind the whole time that when state inspec passed and they were through, that they had no intention of keeping me past that point. I was completely duped.

Has anyone ever been hired in, payed an excellent pay rate, allowed to sign up for all your benefits etc and then escorted out to parking lot after inspection? I am going to say that this is probably a very rare occurance with MDS coordinators. Were these administrative dept heads not even looking at the calendar and ARD dates to see that the care plan in question was actually done and sitting on my "to sign" shelf? Brutal, just cut throat brutal. Their care plans and MDS were a disaster before I came in, and now that all areas were fixed they terminated me. I honestly don't know what to do now. How do I go for another position when I don't trust that I can even state them as my last employer/reference as dirty as they do business?

I sure wouldn't list these jerks on my resume. I have had this happen to me, more than once, when I was in the military. I would be brought in to clean up a mess. Once I had things cleaned up and running smoothly, I would get canned and they would bring in a "fair-haired" boy to take the easy job I left him and to get all kinds of atta boys on his performance evals. This type of job betrayal, while not frequent, is common enough. All you can do is to pick yourself up and move on.

They sound like absolute rotters ... poor character indeed.

Imagine a minute longer on the payroll would threaten their bonuses

Especially like (not) the quick removal so you don't have time to mess up anything (as if you would) haha

Can you see a lawyer? Would this help?

Best wishes for finding another job soon

This is very sad. Being a surveyor, I am always sad to hear when a facility does something like this. But just get your resume up to date and go for it. I guarantee that with your expertise in this area you will be able to find a job.

Thank you Caliotter3 for sharing your experience. I realize that this maneuver does occur in all fields of employment and typically the ousted employee really has no recourse. I have given thought to the possibility of being honest on my next application process to actually include this position as my most recent because as we all know prospective applicants are reluctant or don't want to include a position where they were terminated and don't want that employer to be contacted, and feel it makes you look bad and most apps are clean with absence of fire or terminated listed But, all applications do include the option of "reason for leaving" and "can we contact this employer?" We all stay away from that if there was a bad separation but I feel that after stating my reason for leaving if a prospective healthcare employer can't connect the dots with my explaination of reason for leaving r/t directly after state survey, then it shows me that pristine apps and resumes with no "terminated" listed are disregarded also. My former applications and resume have been excellent until this debacle and I still was not contacted for any interviews as we all have been experiencing no call back for interview these days. So now I just feel that it may not even matter if I leave this off or on my next application process. What do yall think on that?

For reason for leaving, I would put, "terminated after successful State survey". That should frost the ex-employers crock and might serve to draw the attention of prospective employers.

I absolutely agree Caliotter3 with that precisely very well put reason for leaving. Thank you for caring.

Newtress,

Once I started reading your thread, I was thinking the same thing you said...

They had planned to ditch you once Survey was over.

I would lay bets Management wanted to bring in a friend of theirs or bring someone in at a much lower pay...

As I've said before, MDS Coordinators are in demand.

You will find better!

It gets better. The following day I got a call from the social worker who quit right before I got nixed (she smelled a rat and got out before they could out her) I learned that not only is she gone, and me, but the marketing PR gentleman quit the next day after I was cleared out like a gale force wind. These corporate ladies they sent in to whip the place into shape in their paranoia and panic about state, made the work environment so toxic that their sociopathic plot to use everyone to work us overtime and in such a frenzy that after state cleared they would have three very important, well paid employees gone and that is so cost effective for them to have us off their payroll. And.. to top it off I forgot to mention one month prior they forced the original administrator who was 7 mo pregnant out the door in one day due to them not accepting her OB Gyn's order for her to reduce her hours with her difficult guarded pregnancy. They would not accept her reducing her hours down to 32 and told her she needed to resign or be dismissed because someone had to be there absolutely full time, and she was made to clear out her office and desk within an hour, sobbing uncontrollably and poof she was gone and never heard from again. This is just plumb wild. Those two regional big wig RN BSN NFA characters hurt quite a few employees.

My dilema still concerns me about this facility being my very most recent employment and fear of using them as a contact reference and secondly you're all so supportive (and I appreciate that!) in reminding me that MDS is a needed specialty but.. I only had little more than 6 mo experience in that. I do sound like a whinner in saying no one would consider me with far less than a yrs experience. It just feels bad all around now and I truly loved doing the resident interviews and the autonomy and my little office, my computer, NO MED PASS/FLOOR work! and the great hours. Now I feel burned. depressed, betrayed, lied to and lied about.

I think now my question specifically is could I be anywhere near a candidate for a new MDS position with not a lot of time experience (although all aspects/areas of MDS are complex and you are doing far more than 3.0 input and working with all departments and so closely with rehab therapy and I had to take call 7 days a wk) my delegated assigned duties including rounds was over three pages long not to mention care plan revisions on over 100 every single day along with re-entries admits and discharges. I had an imense amount of experience in a short period of time. I just don't know where I stand in being acceptable to another employer. I so do not want to do floor nursing again and turning 52 here shortly has a lot to do with it.

Sounds like you would be very marketable.

Don't worry about your 6 months experience.

Good MDS Coordinators are in demand! :)

What they did to you really stinks. I agree with what everyone else has said. MDS coordinators are in huge demand right now. I get calls from recruiters at least twice a week. Chances are if you are interviewing with another company they already know that the company you worked was pretty shady. In my area the corporations who own the LTC facilities know quite a bit about their competition. Good Luck!! :)

Thank you for the replies and the vote of confidence. I have in fact submitted an unemployment claim for the first time this week. From what I understand, the gal who was doing my claim via telephone (after staying on the line for 1.5 hrs to get through) stated that the former employer, based on my statements regarding the way I was termed, will in all likelyhood completely deny the claim and that turns into an appeal process. Good grief. She also said that being fired and quitting is basically one in the same in that the former employer has the final yay or nay on you receiving your unemployment. The standard info I had always heard was that if you were just fired you certainly had a better change at receiving your unemployment. Not true. My pay stubs have to also be mailed or faxed to an adjudiciary dept before they even deem the claim pursuant and all this wrangling. My friends certainly never mentioned all the hoops and just seemed to get it immediately even when reason for discharge was serious med error. What a world we live in.
