Can't get a job :(

Specializes in Filling out RN applications.

Hey everyone,

I graduated in December 2008 with a 3.82 GPA (Bachelors program). I passed the NCLEX in February and have my Massachusetts RN license. I have applied to around 40 positions all around Massachusetts and have not heard back on any of them. NOT ONE CALL.

I've applied to anything and everything that looks like a position a new grad would be qualified for. I haven't been picky. I know beggars can't be choosers.

Does anyone have any advice? I have a great resume, and write decent cover letters. I just don't know why I can't get a job!

Michelle

PS I am beginning to hate it when people tell me that nurses can always find work or that the poor economy hasn't touched healthcare related workers. :banghead:

Were you a nursing assistant before you started nursing school. It helps out alot, with the experience part. And if not, i would honestly reccomend getting a job, so atleast you have an in. Or, apply to some good rehabs in the area.. have you tried spaulding?

you are not left alone, I have 12 months COOP(internship) along with BSN but still could not find a job. I hope things will get better in few months or so..Please let us know when you find a job because that would definitely give me a hope..Guys, please keep this thread alive...

mchll9898,

It's not you. You sound like an excellent candidate. Unfortunately, there's a lack of open positions right now due to the economy. Many hospitals have cut back on staffing because of budget restrictions. My advice is to keep on applying and be persistent! Find names of managers and contact them directly. Don't rely solely on HR.

my friend nurse in Boston told me that her hospital does not hire new grads for a while.

Thats nothing about you, this is just economy. Try not to panic because as every recession will end and good times will be back.

Just try to stay in touch with all nursing news, try to self educate, do some extra courses, go for medical mission trip.

All your resume with extra things in it will work, if not now, in little while but it will work.

You have to show them that you dont stop, and you can be even better.

Hey, i live in worcester and graduated in Dec. i have applied to all the hospitals all over but no job. I finally decide to start applying in Maine. I finally got a job today in Maine. it is in a rural area, not a good pay but aleast i got a job. It is TAMC in Presque Isle, if u are interested.

Specializes in Filling out RN applications.

Wow, Presque Isle is way out in the boonies. I have some friends that went to school up there. Congrats on the new job!

I was a CNA from May 2008 till Jan 2009. I was let go because there was so little work. There were budget cuts, not to mention a low patient census. I was per diem and would schedule a week's worth of work in advance and would be canceled every single night some weeks. It wreaked havoc on my sleep, because I'd be up all night without work since I had slept during the day preparing for a night's work, just to be canceled around 8pm or so.

So right now I'm out of work. Some people have suggested that I get another CNA job somewhere else in Maine but can't see doing that and then a month down the road have to quit because I get a job in Mass. Hiring people is an expense, and I don't think that a hospital/agency would appreciate me leaving them so shortly. So I decided to put all my efforts into finding a job in Mass.

By the way, I am moving down there to be with my boyfriend of 3 years. On another topic someone told me just to look around in Maine, but you can see why I want to move to Mass.

I moved to mass becos I want to be close to my fiance too. But right now I have loans to pay and can't be unemployed anymore. Most recruiters I spoke to told me the longer I stay at home, the less likely I am to find a job.

You sound just like I did about 10 months ago. I used to get sooo annoyed when people would tell me that I should have no problem finding a job. I moved to NC. Move if you can! Mass Hospitals don't want to hire and train new grads, but years from now they will regret it! It is most certainly not YOU, it's the system. Many girls I graduated with in May '08 are still without jobs. Most of the ones working as nurses in Mass are at long term living facilities (last resort for them). I've heard of new grads getting Dialysis jobs and LTC, but not much else unless they're an internal candidate. I wish you the best of luck, try to keep your chin up!

Michelle, apply to HCA in New Hampshire. I went through the same thing you're experiencing. Graduated with honors, 3 years of CNA/tech experience, extra certifications, but it didn't seem to matter at all. It took me nine months to get a job and it's in New Hampshire. My hospital is hiring though, so is Portsmouth Regional if you don't mind a commute.

Thanks to all for the updates..Sarah,I could not locate the hospital which you have mentioned..If I PM you my resume, will you be able to give that to your nurse manager. I have no other contacts in that area and I am in a big need of a job otherwise I would not have asked you. If you can not do that, it is fine too:nuke:
