BMC and MGH New Grad Residency programs?

Hi all,

I have heard from some other nursing students that Boston Medical Center and MGH are planning on offering new grad RN programs "soon." I looked on both of their websites and found very limited information on either one of these programs. So, I was curious to see if anyone else had heard about either of these programs and what you might know about start dates, application deadlines, etc. I'm graduating in a few months and I think these might be at least worth applying to (I know they're very competitive). BMC has been in a lot of financial trouble in the past few years. They eliminated something like 200 positions in 2010-2011. I haven't heard anything about them starting a new grad program up. Seems like most hospitals' new grad "programs" have gone by the wayside in the past 5 years or so... when I graduated in 2007, everywhere had them.

I interviewed for BMC's new grad program two weeks ago. The openings were posted on BMC's career website in early May, so I naturally applied. When I spoke with the recruiter she said they were overwhelmed by the response of over 2000 applicants. She said they only called 65 people for interviews.

I haven't heard anything about MGH having a new grad program, I've heard they almost exclusively hire new graduates from their MGH School of Nursing. It's true what KelRN15 said about new grad programs having gone to the wayside over the past few years, so it's nice that BMC has the resources (maybe??) to offer such a program once again. I talked to a nurse last night who said she went through BMC's new grad training program her first year out of school back in the early 2000s and said that it was a great, but challenging experience.

Thanks for all of the info, guys! Maybe they'll offer some more programs in the near future. I think you're right bsuciu, I have heard the same thing about partners hospitals hiring from within first, which makes total sense. Hey I know this post is 5 years old at this point, but I was wondering if BostonRN2013 found a new grad program or if anyone had any information about new grad programs in the Boston area. I graduate in 8 months and wanted to get the lay of the land. Their websites have minimal information which makes me think they aren't too concerned with outside hires to new grad positions.

Hey! I actually ended up moving out of state. Boston is awesome and that's home for me but it's so hard to find a job as a new grad. With that said, I know of several people who got jobs at Beth Israel as new grads. Like you said, that was 5 years ago and I'm a little out of touch with what's going on in Boston now. Good luck to you on your search and let me know if I can help with anything else! :)

St Louis! You can get a job in an acute care setting relatively easily as a new grad. I ended up working at Barnes-Jewish, which is a major teaching Hospital in St Louis. Loved it there and honestly would still work there if we didn't have to move to Florida for my husband's job. They hire new grads all the time at the hospital that I work at in Tampa too.

@wildnursebrendan hey there, do you mind me asking how things ended searching for jobs in Boston ? I checked out your thread and it seems like you are in Texas now. Would you mind sharing your experience looking in Boston?

I only applied for ICU and ED residencies so I didn't apply at a ton of places. Heard back from absolutely zero of them. I think I look decent on paper and had a resume reviewed by someone who used to do hiring for a hospital. I think it's very competitive. Ended up getting an offer for an ICU in Virginia, a system-wide float that would be guaranteed full time hours in 13 week rotations wherever needed, and my old hospital's ED in WA (which I took).
