hi all,

I am looking at ADN programs in MA. I am in MetroWest right now, possibly moving to the South Shore in 1-2 yrs. I was looking at MassBay (I would have to take MANY courses at MassBay in order to get enough credits to be considered for admission, sigh...).

I saw that Quincy College had a really high pass-rate, and it turns out would be very convenient to attend after our move. I was wondering if anyone here has gone through their ADN program, especially their 2.5 yr pt-time program? Some questions:

What kind of wait list do they have right now?

What are their criteria for admission (aside from having the pre-reqs done)?

Could you talk about how their nursing courses/labs/clinicals are scheduled?

Were you happy with the program/professors?

Hi Beth I just graduated from the part time RN program at Quincy College in January. I had to wait nine months to get in because I apllied late (I have since heard that the wait list is two years). I do not know the criteria for entry into the program. When I applied it was first come first serve but may have changed due to the amount of applicants applying for nursing school.

The program is intense. For the first year you will be going to school 3 days a week. One day for lab, one day for lecture, and one day for clinical. After that you will go twice a week as the lab portion is dropped. Clinical is from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm and class 4:00pm to 8:30 pm. The days for clinical and class (lecture for me was every Tuesday while lab and clinical days shifted between Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) will depend upon when you start. You can pick your lab time and request the day you want clinical (they may or may not accomidate you). The lab times were 4pm, 6pm or 8pm.

I was happy with my instructors. One in particular was very tough but I found the NCLEX to be very easy compared to her exams. There is a lot of school work thrown at you so you must be able to digest and understand it quickly. Half on my class did not make it. Not trying to scare you just pointing out the reality of the program. A few failed by a point, but I quess as with all nursing schools, they dont budge. If you dont get a 73% you dont continue. Gerry-I have to ask if the teacher to whom you are referring is Susan C? I only ask because I find her tests much more challenging than the NCLEX prep tests I take to study. Thankfully I am doing okay!!!! I imagine I will be well prepared for the NCLEX when the time comes!

Beth-I am not sure of the Quincy wait at present. I took my pre-req's and applied in November of 2004 for the January 2006 program and was on the wait list. I did, however, get a seat and am set to be done this December. I am very happy with the program thus far and feel I will be well prepared for the NCLEX exam. I don't think everyone feels the same way. I am only in school one night a week and clinical another night, but I study a lot and feel stressed and overwhelmed at times. But I am told this is just how nursing school is no matter where you go.

Best of luck in your search and believe me, time flies!!! I recommend getting all your core courses (English, Math, Psych, Soc, history etc.) done while you are waiting for the program to start so that you won't have to take them concurrently.

Yes it is Sue C. A friend of mine who did not make it the final semester was re admitted to the day program to retake the semester and tells me that the test are sooooo much easier in the day program. She is in shock when she hears her classmates complain about the test. She tells us that they would have never made it in the evening program with Sue C:lol2:

Hang in there, the third semester is the worst as far as students failing out. I found the last semester to be fairly straight forward and it really flew by fast! Is Mara in your class?

Thank you for your replies... trying to weigh the options out there. Also looking seriously again at the MassBay program (theirs is 3yrs for the night program). I don't qualify to apply for Spring 08 (sigh--BIO is more than 5 yrs old, plus don't have any MassBay credits yet) but I could get enough together to apply for Spring 09. Seems so far away, but will give me time to get all the prereqs done.

So I guess, any evening MassBay students/grads here? How did you like the program? Did you feel well-prepared? Any drawbacks/negatives? Where did you do your clinicals?

No Mara in my class Gerry. We are technically the "boston" campus but were relocated to the Quincy campus. She may be in the Quincy campus and have class on Wednesday nights. I know a few people in that class.

Her tests are tough but I am luckily doing well. I long ago got over the idea that I had to get A's!!! haha. I am quite comfortable with my B's. Quite a few of my classmates are on academic warning. It bums me out because I know they will make great nurses if they can get through this semester. I am glad to hear the last semester is a little more straightforward. Man, Sue is really smart though. I cannot believe how much she just rattles off. Overall I think she is a good teacher and explains things well. The tests just really expect you to know your material and how to prioritize it all!

Yes all of the clinics start a 2:30. The clinicals take place at various hospitals. My class went to: Good Sams, Brigham and Womens, Mass General, South Shore Hospital, Brockton Hospital, New England Siani.

Many of my classmates are just starting finding jobs (graduated in January).

You can do this??:lol2: Please explain. I start the FT program next week and am paranoid that I will flunk out...losing all this time and money. If you fail a semester you can retake it?? Really?? I was told if you flunk you are out no questions. What semester did she fail?

You may be re admitted based on your performance. If you failed by a slim margin, your chance for re admittance is good. If you failed by a large margin chances are you will not be allowed to retake the semester.
