UMSON Spring 2013

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hey!

Anyone planning on applying to UMSON for Spring of '13?

i finally got my call!! I got in!!!! So excited!!!

To everyone that has been accepted, CONGRATULATIONS!! To those who have been waitlisted or rejected, join me in saying...LET'S DO THIS!!!

I am the idiot who missed the deadline by 17 hours!! Believe me, I will NEVER forget that moment when I went to apply, and saw that I was too late...when I thought I was TEN DAYS EARLY!!!! 17 hours--it's ingrained in my head forever ;(

I am waitlisted at another school, but am not optimistic, so here's to Fall of 2013!!!!

I understand and I am sorry. But I think it is too early to get discouraged. It is not over until your status changes to Rejected Application. And even then you might get admitted to a later semester if you apply again with new information in your application. You have to remember that people from all over the country and even all over the world apply to many schools. They are given two weeks to accept our offer and if they do not, an offer is made to someone else soon thereafter. And others find they cannot afford the time or the money to come to nursing school or for other reasons. I don't have real numbers but my sense is that ten percent of each incoming class was not made an offer on the first round. It could be more. Or less.

Maybe it would help if you proceeded as if you have been accepted. Take a look at the SON website under Accepted Students (which, as of this morning has not been updated for spring admits, but not a whole lot changes). Get the right CPR card. Get the immunizations. Review your A & P. Brush up on medical terminology - there are lots of internet sites including Johns Hopkins. None of that is a waste of time. Most of all, remain positive.

Best of luck.

Grey Lady, I have a private message I would like to send you regarding the Fall 13 BSN application. It is a very unique and private question. I am stationed in Alaska right now and am having trouble reaching someone on the phone. If you don't mind, is there anyway I can get this question to you for advice? I am being told your message box is too full to receive any messages. Thank you!

Edit, the quote above has nothing to do with my request. I was just trying to contact you.

Good morning everyone,

I want to apply for the Spring 2014 at Baltimore

So these are what I get from people's posts of numerous topics....

1. Overall GPA > or = 3.5, Science GPA > or = 3.5

2. 1 essay (is it "A statement of goals and objectives" as it appeared in their website list?)

3. Teas score > 70

4. Volunteer experiences

5. 2 letters from Professors

6. Transcripts of all schools

Is that all?

*As I read their website, they said "Applicable Advanced Placement (AP) or CLEP score reports" is also required. I'm really confused here. I thought the Teas was the only entrance exam to get in. What is this CLEP score? Do I really need to take it? Did any of you guys who got accepted took it before?

*I've just lived and studied in the US for 3 years. I didn't go to high school or get my high school diploma here, but in my country. My question is, do I have to submit the high school transcript even if it's not from the US?

*And, one more question, can anyone please tell me what does the "Personal resume" require? How long should it be? What should I write on it?

Any information would be appreciated. Thank you for reading my post!

The AP/CLEP scores may not apply to you. So don't worry about those if they sound unfamiliar to you. I just got accepted and they did not apply to me. You don't need your high school transcript only your college transcripts to prove you have completed the prerequisites they require. On my personal résumé I did it just like a work resume but instead of job history I talked about my medical volunteering history. It should be a page long. Search online for proper formatting.

Thank you so much bsteve5!!! Can I ask you one more question? That is, since I can't finish all the prerequisites by Fall 2013, can I still apply as long as I finish at least 2 major science courses when I submit the application? Another one is, I've retook 2 courses (not Science courses), how will it effected my overall GPA? Will they sum up, then divide to get the average GPA or they will replace the old ones by the new ones?

Thank you again for your reply ^.^

They take your average GPA, I have some...troublesome...courses from a previous education experience and as long as you can explain it they will look at the whole picture, not just one aspect!

You're welcome! You may want to call and ask them but if I am not mistaken I believe that you have to have all of the prereqs done by time the program starts. For example I had 3 prereqs incomplete before I applied for Spring 2013 but I am in the process of completing them now so they will be done by time I start the program.

Hi Chaudo, the school requires a US degree from an accredited institution. That would be a U.S high school diploma or an associates degree. If you will graduate at the end of the semester, ask your school to send a notice on your behalf to UMSON saying that you will graduate at the end of the semester. That acts as a waiver.

BUT IF YOU WILL NOT EARN AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE BEFORE THE APPLICATION DEADLINE OR BEFORE THE SEMESTER ENDS, HURRRY! REGISTER FOR TOEFL OR THE EQUIVALENT EXAM LISTED ON THE UMSON WEBSITE. It takes about a month before toefl results are released, so if you plan on taking toefl please do it on time.

This is my 4th year in the United states as well. I applied for fall 2012, but my application got cancelled because it was incomplete. That was because I wasn't on track to graduate at that time and I did not do toefl as well. All praises and thanks to God, by His mercy I was able to graduate Summer 2012, I applied again for Spring 2013 and I got in!!!!!!!

The best thing to do, in my opinion is to email the school at "[email protected]" and explain your personal situation to them and ask for clarifications. I got better answers when I emailed than I did when I called the admissions office.

Hello SlaveOfdMostMerciful,

The equivalent exam listed on their website which you talked about is the TEAS, right? Actually, I prefer the Teas rather than Toefl ^^

No, it is the IELTS. Everyone must take the Teas Exam regardless of circumstances. I strongly advice you to get in touch with the school as soon as possible. That way, you'll get a more comprehensive explanation and a plan of action. Don't stress about it though!

Good afternoon, everyone ^3^

Thanks SlaveOfdMostMerciful for your advice!!!

I've just send an email to the school yesterday, telling them that "I really want to get in the BSN program in Spring 2014, but I'm afraid I would get 2 Cs at the end of this semester. If I get high TEAS score, manage to earn all As in the science courses and participate in the volunteer activities, will my chance to be accepted being higher, OR I definitely have to retake those 2 classes?".

And then they reply:

Thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON).

We calculate 3 separate GPA's. Your science GPA, prerequisite GPA, and your overall GPA. The admissions committee reviews the entire application and does a comprehensive review. Their decision is not based solely on grades. If you receive A's in your sciences, that is a good indicator that you could be successful in the nursing program. With your other experience, you should be competitive in the applicant pool even with your C grades.

Thank you,

Guys, I'm moved to tears....But does she really mean that I still have chance? Or she just said that to be polite?

Is there any of you that get accepted with Cs (not from the 4 major science classes)?

And do you know anywhere I could apply for the volunteer program? Do you have to wait in a long time? Do they require health documents?
