Mercy medical center

U.S.A. Maryland

I'm looking at several hospitals in MD, well, just a few since hopkins called me back. I heard mercy pays great so i'm considering it as well. The thing is they only seem to hire experienced nurses.

Do they hire new grads? A friend got hired about 4 or so months ago and i'm not sure how she got the job because she's moved to MD. She does speak well of the hospital but i'd like to hear other people's opinion as well.

Does anyone know anything about mercy in terms of them hiring new grads? how's it like working there? Any info about their hiring process?

Is downtown baltimore safe? I live in philly and i heard baltimore is actually worse than philly? I live downtown and i don't think philly is that bad. we've got good and bad parts and i'm hoping baltimore is the same. let me know your experiences, especially if you're a new grad currently working for them.

thx

Its been years since I was in Philly but as I recall Balt. does remind me of Philly except our bread and pizza is lame, lol. Kind of a blue collar town if you ask me. I lived in Federal Hill for years and loved it. It was city living no doubt with all the annoyances that can come with it but also the great perks. I would consider working at Mercy's location depending how close and secure parking is. The neighborhood is fine during the day and only a bit sketchy at night, imo. Don't know anyone that works there so can't advise about working conditions. I haven't heard of any hospital in this area that isn't hiring new grads. Its a pretty decent area for nurses right now.

I think Baltimore gets a bad rap. I'd be fine working in the area Mercy is in. It's not bad at all. I'm pretty sure they have covered parking for staff.

The only dept I've heard about is their L&D/PP. I heard new grads usually aren't very happy in that dept as it tends to be sink or swim with not much teamwork.

It seems like a nice place to work. I did my clinicals in nusing school there a couple of years ago ( Tele) , and it was a really nice unit. Staff was friendly and i heard thier benfits and pay rate is actually better than a coiuple of hospitals close by. They have staff parking at designated areas , and i do believe its a monthly fee. Like someone mentioned. The neighbourhood is prettyy goo during the day but at night, you just have to be careful, but as long as you are parked in the garage..i belive you are fin.e Besides regardless of the hospital..one has to be careful when working at night. My friend worked in the ortho floor 3 years ago, and she quit becso she hated it..too stressful and the whole staff started quitting..something about workload..

goodluck

I've never worked at Mercy, but I used to live in the neighborhood. The neigborhood is absolutely fine. At night, it gets a little deserted, so you just have to be aware of your surroundings; as in any neighborhood. But other than that, it's fine.

I hate to say it but when i did my maternity rotation, i hated PP. And i work on a different floor in the same hospital and i love it. Maternity is something i've zero interest in.

Thanks for the info.

One of my good friends is a circulating OR RN at Mercy. She has been very happy there for going on 2 years. I know the staff gets along well and the pay is good. The neighborhood is close to downtown and is definitely not like the neighborhood JHH is located in!!! My friend has never had any complaints about the location. I also have an acquaintance who worked in L+D very briefly at Mercy-- and I agree with the above post--- it was kind of like sink or swim for her. She had quite a bit of exp in L+D but it seemed like the staff just threw her to the wolves and enjoyed giving her a hard time bc she was the new girl on the block. Needless to say she was only there for a few months before she left....

I don't have first hand experience, but one of the new grads at my hosptial (Harbor) was offered a postion @ Mercy in the ER.. paid $5.00 more per hour than Harbor. If you are interested in ER, they also are the areas SANE unit.. (for sexual assaults).. This is a good stepping stone too if you are interested in forensics. Which is a booming field.

Take care and good luck...

I myself am looking at hospitals in MD but the only one so far that called me back was JHH and from what I have been reading I guess it isn't all that great but if that is what I get then that is what I get just don't know where else to apply ... live or do anything!:banghead:

Baltimore Wash. Med. center in Glen Burnie MD. has fantastic orientation for new grads.. I know that they need nurses in the ED.. They have expanded it. The recruiter's name for the ED is Sue Stien. Anne Arundel Medical Center is good as well. I have heard that their ICU is awesome and the orientation is great... I have also heard that getting through to HR is a bit hard.. Do you just want Baltimore??? I work @ Harbor Hospital. It is a great place to work. The nurse recruiter's name is Amy Foy. If you want to do trauma and such I have heard that Univ. of MD. multi trauma unit is awesome. I met a agency nurse that worked there for 8 years. She said she has traveled all over the place and has never found a better place than the multi trauma unit @ Univ. of MD. As far as places to live, I can't help you.. I live on the shore.... But, check out old threads on here about this... Good luck and take care.....:nurse::redbeathe:nurse:
