Has anyone heard from Howard Community College for the day or evening/weekend program for Fall '09?

Hang in there HCC has an excellent RN program! I graduated this past May and passed NCLEX on the first try. Actually so far, everyone from my graduating class who has taken NCLEX has passed on the first try. The HCC instructors really prepared us well. The majority of my fellow graduates have jobs now.

I was an eve/wknd student and was wait-listed for a year, but as I look back now, it was well worth it. While you are waiting, finish up any outstanding prereqs you have. Also, see if you can borrow the nursing fundamentals book and start reading it now. There is a book that HCC recommends called Test Success that you can get in the bookstore. I highly recommend it as it helps you answer the tests questions. Studying nursing is not like studying any other subject. There have been straight A 4.0 students who have failed out of the program.

Best wishes to you both!

I just graduated from HCC's nursing program July 22 09, and I agree with elizabeth. HCC is an excellent program and have 100 nclex passing rate. The instructors are awesome ! Good luck with the waiting list thing. Thankfully I was promised a seat in the nursing program right out of highschool due to me being apart of the renew program at HCC. I also agree that the test success book is awesome. This book will really prepare you for nursing exams. Good luck !

I applied but was accepted /seated for spring 2010 anyone else starting then?

I received an acceptance letter about two weeks ago. I was initially waitlisted back in May. I got accepted for Spring 2010. However, I am currently in nursing school--already accepted by AACC, so I declined.

What were your GPA's? If you qualify do they just waitlist you til the next semester or... is it more to it? I was in A&P (at PGCC) today and was talking to one of the girls and she was telling me about HCC and the programs flexibility. Anyone know what the average GPA is there?

I could be wrong but I think there have been some changes to HCC's RN program entrance requirements. I believe they are now considering GPAs rather than just the 2.50 standard. I believe applicants now have to take an entrance exam.

Yep. There is now an entrance exam that you have to take. So, for folks who are applying for Summer/Fall 2010 you have to take what is called the "Evolve" exam. If you applied for Fall 2009 but was waitlisted until a later date, you don't have to take it. Definitely go to one of the RN Program Information Sessions. Their next one is Thursday, September 17, 2009 in Laurel, MD. They can answer alot of your questions...besides it's mandatory that you attend one if you decide that you want to apply to HCC.

I'm not sure if they are using GPAs to also rank applications ... that's a good question to ask their Office of Admissions and Advising. The best way to get a prompt response is via email. I'm out of county, on the waiting list, and my GPA thus far is a 3.8. I still have AP2 left to take next semester.

I started this Spring at HCC and am coming up on the final for the fundamentals course and had to chuckle reading "ElizabethC"'s post- cause indeed I am sitting next to the Test Success book as well as pouring over the 1500+ page text wishing I had studied during the 10 months I was waiting to begin the program... your advice is so on - if only I had read it back in September!!! Congratulations also - really... and any more insights/suggestions you care to pass along I know I would value greatly (or just any tidbits - like whether you were able to transcend the need for sleep while in the program etc...) Thanks again - I hope your year is going really well!

Actually I'm back at HCC this semester to take some prereqs for my MSN. I am on campus Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. PM me if you would like to meet and maybe I can help you with some of studying.

Congratulations on going back for your MSN, GadgitGurl. Wow--you didn't waist anytime getting back to school.
