The look!!!

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

When I tell people that I am going into nursing I get the LOOK! Then they ask "does your partner support you" and I look them in the eye and say, yes my wife loves the idea. They are shocked that a straight guy would go into nursing.

Very small minds in this worlds!!!!!:uhoh3:

Any one else get the LOOK???

Re: The Look!

I'm not sure where you live, but I have so many male nurses in my circle of friends and colleagues that I never thought of it as weird. The husbands of us fem RNs never think twice, and nor do my husbands friends. (Especially once they know the hefty salaries we all make). !

Seriously, they have been educated as to what nurses do, and they know what excellence it takes to be a nurse.

Not one of those guys would EVER consider a male nurse odd, maybe because of OUR attitude, and how special, specialized and smart they know we are.

Anybody who gives you the look is simply not educated as to what nursing is about, and that's the fault of our profession. We need to a better job of educating the public as to who we are and what we do.

I know a Male Nurse who is a Former Corpsman of the US Navy. He told me the other day that his only regret is that he never saw any combat where he was shot at while serving in the Gulf War with Marines. So I do not think he is lacking any manliness in the least even as a Peds Nurse.

Don't let the "Look" get to you. I get the Look every time I tell people I have an MBA (Well, actually I get jaws dropping and stuttered speech...). I am female and pretty so I apparently I do not fit the profile. :p Good luck to you.

those two degrees go together well. just passed nclex thursday, and i'm starting my mba program at univ of florida in january (online). taking the cpa exam in a couple of months. opportunities abound!

as far as the pretty thing, nursing schools are loaded with hot chicks. not to burst the bubble, but some of them are flat out smoking hot :). i'm all for it!

Specializes in ED, ICU, MS/MT, PCU, CM, House Sup, Frontline mgr.

Why would it burst my bubble to be around other pretty women? That makes no sense.

As for the Look I was talking about my MBA. I am not in Nursing School yet so I do not know what kind of looks I will get once I am a Nurse.

Good luck to you on the CPA exam. I personally am more interested in Securities. :D

thanks. the cpa exam is actually pretty easy. anything with a 43% pass rate can't be that hard. i took it once, passed it, let it lapse. i don't want to do accounting, it's just a title, and another set of initials to stick after my name. it says i understand financials. and since i can take a test and pick it back up without taking another class, why not?

i won't be handling patients for more than a couple of years as an rn (i'm only going to work as a nurse while i'm getting the mba ).

and i did think you were talking about nursing school. lots of beautiful young single girls there, for sure. i don't know about mba school, at least at this point. i'd imagine not near as many :). pa school is loaded with beauties, by the way. not to mention they're all going to be making 100k.

as far as the look, i've learned if i quickly say that i'm going to be an rn, it usually goes over better with the guys instead of saying "i'm going to be a nurse".

what's in a name anyway? as shakespeare said.... :).

but who am i kidding? i hate the word "nurse". just rubs my manhood the wrong way.

Then what? I am asking because I am not going to be a bedside Nurse for very long. I give myself 6 months to a year. RN is another set of credentials.

why, ceo of a health care company, of course.

We have the same goals! It is nice to meet you! :rotfl:

Must.... resist... cracking.... joke.....aaaargh!

:D

heh. that gave me a good laugh! um, i'm talking about psychological ideals of manhood. there is NO physical component referred to in that sentence :).

mba2brn, it's nice meeting you as well.

ROFL!! Only in the male nurse forum. Funny.

I have a BS in Business Management and start my accelerated BSN program next month. I might go that route too after a while, but for now I'm more interested in patient care. I'm looking into FNP, PA, or CRNA.. I guess I'll figure it out after I get some experience.
