Requiring men to wear "neatly trimmed mustaches" wouldnt fly if someone were to challeng it unless there were specifics in writing. "Neatly trimmed" is subjective. At my school the only thing with hair was men and women had to have it tied back off the fore head and face as well as above the collar. No coloring was allowed officialy but I noticed after a couple months women were dying their hair again and no one said anything. Dont remember anything about facial hair. What happens if a middle eastern male with one of those Al kida type beards came through.

My only concern with facial hair...which is the only reason why I shave is what do you do about masks? Whats the point of wearing a mask in an airborne threat environment when you cannot complete a proper seal?

I guess you could wear a gas mask or scuba helmet....

I live in NorCal, where the old hippies go to die, and I remember when I was considering becoming a Radtech I had to do 100 volunteer hours in a local hospital x-ray center as required by the JC I was attending before I could enter the program. Several older male nurses working in the OR at the hospital had long hair and beards. They actually wore masks that covered their beards and mustaches. Havent seen those masks since but I still remember them to this day.

I'll be seeing if the mask seals around my beard in the next two weeks. If not I'll shave it, but the hair stays.

I just whatched a movie on TV (Brad Pitt/Robert Redford)and the nurses were wearing weird looking long pointed face maskes.
For sure a beard would have fit in them. they were playing medical personel in the Mid-East.

I don't give a rats ass about fashion and hate wasting beer money on haircuts. However, with clinical coming up I did away with the 'wild man of Borneo' hair and now have a clean business cut. I'm getting it trimmed every 5-6 weeks too. Why? Because just like a clean wrinkle free uniform and courteous professional care, it will make my patients feel better. Which is the job.

Why do you think it will make them feel better? I am not challenging what you said, just curious.

No problem...

It may not make every last pt feel better...but even if it's just one, frightened, bigoted and prejudiced as hell... and they are out there....we regularly read about them on this forum....If being clean cut makes them feel better, then it's the job.

I'm not the morality or tolerance police...but when someone is ill, their lack or either should not result in additional suffering on their part.

I know I'm a bit late on this, but I just read the original question in this thread (which was posted in 2007) today.

Welcome to the USA! Yes, you live in a democratic country. Remember two things:

1) Just because you get the most votes in a Presidential election doesn't mean you win.

2) Your First Amendment right to free speech doesn't extend to how you wear your hair at work. The First Amendment doesn't protect your right to speech regarding your employer and their ability to fire you. It only protects you from the GOVERNMENT coming after you for it. So, the police cannot arrest you for having long hair or blue hair, but your employer can terminate you for not meeting their dress code.
