I am going into second semester. Just watch what you say and how you joke.

Women get offended easier than men. A comment that would be thrown off in a male environment becomes a huge issue because someone is bound to be offended. Also women will smile in your face and "secretly" be hurt. If a man is offended by someone, we tend to just ignore the person. Basically...study, learn, keep your mouth shut, and be neutral professional to avoid any problems. It can happen, and when it does you'll find yourself asking "what did I do wrong?". You have to learn to function with a different mindset. Good Luck.

You are correct. I work in a MICU. On some nights their are up to 4 male RNs working in the MICU, other nights I am the only "MURSE" working. I normally stay in my patients room. Women talk and talk and talk and talk and talk.

They have their women talk, they talk about sex, relationships, babys, and everything else. Some of it is great, to learn the female perspective. I have gained insight. On the other hand, I refuse to engage in talk of a carnal nature with my female coworkers.

I like to kid around and have a good time at work. But I refuse to engage in a conversation that could get me into trouble. WHen I asked what I think, I state, I dont know, that is beyong my level of understanding. I dont insult people, belittle people or engage in gossip. Now when two of the guys are working, it is different, both of them were in the Navy and I am army. What we say amongst ourselves is our business and we keep it to ourselves..

I'm the only male out of 33 students and I feel like there is no difference in treatment between myself and the other students. We all get along and respect one another, they even elected me as president of our class. We are always joking about me knowing their cycles and feeling like I am married to 32 women but it is all in good fun.

I haven't run in to this problem. Honestly if it was a problem I probably would pay no mind to it. My goal is to get through school and that same goal I hope is yours. Focus on the task at hand.

I am a woman but have it seems connected with quite a few boys in our classes. I of course should be studying but had to respond to the initial post because it was so laughable (did he really use the term "overpowered"?) - Well I have to say that I have been really dismayed at my schools frantic scramble to keep the male students really by some surprising means. I have seen professors bend rules I thought were canon to ensure that our class maintained their semblance of gender balance. I have also seen time after time in a class of 50 - the 5 men being more visible than the 45 women combined. I actually did a paper examining gender trends in nursing as well as medical school and know that I made a few people a bit uncomfortable just by raising what some still see as the "shameful" notion that nursing is still as it has been from its inception a women's profession. I have to say - I wish my school had taken a more feminist perspective -celebrating its history. But back to your feeling "overpowered?" or invisible? or targeted. Hmmmm but at least you alleviated our fears that you were not gay? (I thought that we were supposed to work on our biases and ignorance as health care providers - not celebrate them?) OK back to studying (have to not give in to procrastination like this...
