Wall of Shame

Specialties LTC Directors

My facility is getting a new DON (I just quit). I've heard at her last facility she had what she called a "wall of shame" on which she would post pictures of nurses who had made mistakes. I am flabbergasted. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

I met the woman once...she was rude, overbearing, and condescending, but a wall of shame????

I am predicting a cessation in self-reporting med errors.

And just another example of the many things that has always given me the creeps about nursing whether specific to it or not.

I think specific to nursing as in Hey Dr. Schmuckman have you seen the wall of shame the medical director set up in the patient's entryway?"

I think for the very limited time that my millennial diva self deigned to work under such a "manager," I would be posting pics of said "Director" (think chewing on a large bite of lunch, scratching an itch in an awkward place, picking her nose, etc) on the wall of shame every night. That should boost staff morale. Honestly, this wall seems like a slippery slope into violating resident privacy. You know the shining star that came up with this plan would think nothing of adding written details about the nurses' error to the wall. Only a matter of time before they get tagged for violating HIPAA.

I just had to comment again... I feel like this Wall of Shame thing can get the facility in trouble legally. In addition to the HIPAA thing I mentioned in my previous comment... What if a resident had an adverse event (a fall, hospitalization, etc) that could not be prevented? Say the resident has litigious family members and wanted to blame the nurse/facility for this unavoidable event. Couldn't these family members then use the nurse's presence on the Wall of Shame (I don't have any confidence in this DON being able to differentiate between a nurse being at fault and an unavoidable event or systems error...) as proof that negligence or malpractice occurred? Couldn't they see the resident's nurse on the Wall of Shame after dad had that fall and conclude that this was proof that the nurse, and by extension, the facility, was at fault for the adverse event?

I gave a month's notice. They're bringing the new DNS in on Monday... ***... Can you spell disrespect?

So are you supposed to orient her? You don't say how long ago you gave notice, only that you gave a month.

I think this wall is a hoax. It is a terrible liability for a facility to have such a thing in sight of family members.

That is something my former don would do!! That is definitely messed up, and I could see it really disturbing visitors/family members (to say nothing of what would happen if a state surveyor saw it!!!)

Sounds crazy! what a way to build morale! Question, though? Can't people refuse to have their pic taken or does she just use ID pics?
