What are some reasons why some go for their LPN before they go for their RN ?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

I know alot of people who choose to become an LPN before getting a RN degree.I see many young people choosing this route, especially. The amount of time it takes to become a LPN is the same time it takes to get a ADN.Also,Im not sure if it would be wise of me to become a LPN because I already have an Associates degree in Liberal Arts plus a few credits in Childhood Education.I've always wanted to become a RN but Im having trouble being admitted into a program with a 3.47 GPA.Going for LPN would be like moving backwards wouldn't it ? I'd like to hear some opinions.

3 reasons Im trying for the LPN first.

1. I need to hurry up and get a paying job because of financial reasons.

2. LPN needs 6 pre-req's ADN needs 12.

3. LPN school is 12 mo full time, ADN is 24 mo full time.

I will chip away at pre-req's later to bridge if I make it through LPN and can afford it.

Although it took me 3 years to complete my LPN program (3 semesters of pre-reqs + 3 semesters LPN courses) at a CC, I'm able to work as an LPN while doing the bridge program (5 semesters total). Some of my classmates don't work (daddy's supporting them) and some work pt time bartending or waitressing (o.k. money), I'm able to work 2 days/wk as a nurse and still make pretty good money plus full time benefits because I'm staying with my current employer after graduation.

I am SO HAPPY I went for my lpn before rn. I wanted to originally just do the rn program, but I had such a hard time getting into a program and I got so frustrated. I got right in a lpn program and graduated last dec, passed boards in January, and now I work at a local hospital. I LOVE what I do and I have learned sooo much. I am going to start studying for rn soon, plan on taking my first test by november and going from there(im doing excelsior). I am not in a huge hurry to be a rn, just taking it day by day!

My reasons for doing it(ok ASSUMING i actually get accepted and can pay for the LPN program..lol)

is time and money. Its a year plus two months for me to get my LPN where I live.

The ADN program is 2 years PLUS my pre reqs

That may not seem like forver...but on my world it is

i want to start my LPN school AND my pre reqs for ADN together

Once i have my LPN..i can at least God willing work and then start MY ADN classes to become an RN

Then onto BSN,,,masters...who knows what else?It just seems like the best for me with all of my personal and family challenges

The reason I am doing LPN first is because I have spent the last year and a half doing pre req's for an RN program only to be told I will be on a wait list for a year possibly two. I applied to a private LPN school & got right in. My pre req's transfer so all I have to do is nursing courses. And it is only an 11 month program! So now I will be able to work as an LPN while persuing my RN!

My LPN program took 1 year and I took the prerequisites along with the nursing courses. ADN was a minimum of 3 years including prereqs. I had a 3 year old son and wanted to get a good paying job in less time. I planned to go back from the get-go and finally did after several years. The RN course was online except for clinicals. VERY challenging, but so convienient. Just completed my RN program in May and passed NCLEX last month.
