LVN-RN 30 unit-option california

Nursing Students LPN-RN

does anyone know if job opportunities are limited as an RN if you go this route???? I usually see jobs asking for a valid RN license i am just wondering if not having my ADN or BSN will affect how many jobs i can apply for??? for anyone who doesnt know what this is it is minimum required college courses to take the nclex-RN but you do not get a degree you can only take the nclex test. as far as i know you can only practice in california with this option.

Right now I'm looking into LATTC or LAHC, as far as the 30 unit option. I didn't research any other universities as far as the RN to BSN program. CSUDH comes highly recommended and I was going to attend there anyway had I went the traditional route. Is regionally accredited? Will they accept the 30 unit RN license?

My hurdle now is finding a job a 6 month LVN. I got my license 2 years ago. I worked for 6 months and then went back to school. Now that I'm done with schol it's really hard finding a job as a "new" LVN graduate.

Is there anyone here who went through the 30 unit option and moved out of state? what was your experience? Are there any states that would accept a 30 unit option RN?Angela

*** I have a friend who is a highly skilled and experienced ICU nurse who did the Ca 30 unit option. He works here in Wisconsin but for the VA under his Ca license. He does not have a Wi license and the only way he could get one would be to go back to nursing school as if he wasn't a nurse at all and start from scratch. That is exactly what he is doing. Imagine being an experienced ICU nurse and going back to nursing school as if you where not a nurse at all.

BWT he tells me that the VA does not hire 30 unit option RNs anymore but they did back when they where extremely short of nurses.

About the only idea I have for a 30 unit option nurse who must work in another state is to work for a federal facility like a military hospital where you can work under your Ca license.

I am currently an LVN, and has also been trying to look into this, and a lot of the schools, and advisors I have talked to greatly discourages it. It seems to be a "quick fix," kind of like those "get rich overnight" infomercials that we all have seen on tv, however I found myself thinking, "this might be something to consider."

(1) I do not see myself moving out of CA in the next decade or so

(2) After 30-Units, may take me a year to do. I can challenge the RN-Board and pass.

(3) I could possibly get hired as an RN (through this option) at the hospital I work as they are more concerned on license not the diploma

(4) I can possibly start earning considerably than my current measly LVN pay within a year or so.

It's like a jump start to a diet program, we just need that boost... and to me this seems (and please correct me in my thinking)a good way considering our economy as it is and how the school systems and their lotteries/waiting list procedures are and these private colleges like WCU in So-Cal is gouging prospective students, $132K for their BSN 39-month program, I mean like WOW... that's a 4BR house in like AZ or TX, and a nice little condo in CA.

Ok, so I won't have my degree, I can work for it afterwards, yes you waste a year or what not, but I'm sure, you would get your RN license quicker than some people and if you can get a job as an RN, what's the difference, you can then go back and "redo" everything but hey, you are already earning RN pay so you can take your time getting that degree, while the others are just getting their so called entitlements.... and please let us not start the whole grandiose thinking of BSN vs ADN, you are both RNs, period, you are all nurses in the eyes of the patients without much differences other than your "entitlement" attitudes.

So what do you all think... it seems like a great "quick fix" from our shortages it seems, and if you can get that job eh, why not right. So now, what's the flip side to this I wonder, other than the ones we already know. (i.e. no endorsement, good only in CA, no degree)... Comment me back.

*** I doubt you will find a school with openings that allows you to do the 30 unit option.

Ok, so I won't have my degree, I can work for it afterwards,

*** True but just so you understand, if you do the 30 unit option then you can not be licensed in any other state even if you go back and finish your degree. To be licensed in another state you would have to go back to nursing school just as if you where never an RN and do the whole RN portion of the program.

Here in Wisconsin LPNs can do LPN to RN at a community college in 9 months and you get an associates degree that allows to you to be licensed in any state. Only cost about $2800 for residents. To bad other states don't have the same thing.

So what do you all think... it seems like a great "quick fix" from our shortages it seems,

*** Except that there is no shortage, just the opposite. More like a glut of nurses. I think you won't find a school that will let you do it. It's usually on a space available basis and there is never any space.

Funny that I stumbled upon this because I just started considering this option myself. I was going to start tomorrow going around to different community colleges to inquire about the 30 unit option program. I have all my prerequisites completed to be accepted into an ADN program but my problem are the waiting lists; 2-3 years if a seat becomes available in a RN program or I could attend a 64,000 ADN program at WCU...NOT!!! My ultimate education goal is to get a MSN or possibly PhD. Does anybody know if the 30 unit option hinders you from being considered at the university level for entrance into the BSN/MSN progrm? Is there anyone here who went through the 30 unit option and moved out of state? what was your experience? Are there any states that would accept a 30 unit option RN?

Thank you in advance for ANY & ALL advice and information.

This is my first post and I have also been looking at this route. I am in my 40's and have getting ready to finish my LVN. I am wanting to do a bridge program to RN. I am single with no kids and I could literally move to any state that does not have a waiting list. But I do not have alot of time to wait on waitlist to finish up my education. I was thinking about the 30 unit however, I would like to have the option to work in another state. I always like to keep my options open. Does anyone know of a state that there is not a waiting list for the bridge program? If not, I may be forced to take the 30 unit option.

*** No state other than Ca will license a 30 unit option nurse. You could work in other states if you only work in federal hospitals. I know a 30-unit option RN who works here in Wisconsin for the VA.

Wisconsin has 16 technical colleges (community colleges) and they all have LPN to RN. When I did it there was no waiting list, though they where telling people there was a one semester wait. I would call all of them and ask.

Hello,

I was just wondering if you could update me on your career decision? I am looking to do the 30 unit option possibly as well. I do not plan on moving out of Cal. again, so it seems like a viable plan for me. I had never heard of this option before. ..Then one day (recently) I stumbled upon a comment that mentioned it and then I started reading everyone's posts and..well, I am very intrigued. I have not contacted any colleges about it yet; however, I would love to know what more you have found out or what you finally decided to do.

Thanks

*** I think you will find that no college will actually have the 30-unit option available. This even though they will list it in the college catalog.

Oh well, bummer! I got a little excited..shouldn't do that.

I will just go with my original plan then...

Thanks!

I called the BRN in CA and was told "Once you get the your RN through the 30 unit option route you cant EVER change your license even if you go back and get your ADN or BSN it will not reflect on your license" SO if you decide to go with the 30 unit option route your STUCK with it for as long as u have a license, thats when i changed my mind about it.

Hi BLOWINGBUBBLES-

Wow! Thank you for that update.

I have decided against it too. I'm just going to do the extra few classes..I don't want to waist all I've done in the past and not end up with a nursing degree. I ended up looking at all the CC's within the area I will be living and according to most, I can get my ADN in a fairly short amount of time bc i have all of the prereqs and core reqs done already~except for one(math). ..But I need to get started soon bc according to most, my science classes are going to expire soon. Most require that the science classes (Micro and A&P) have to be completed within 5yrs of the application deadline... However, I saw one that said 6yrs was acceptable. Anyway, I need to get on the ball and get serious.

Thanks again~
