Got in...Now what? Really Long

Nursing Students LPN-RN

hello everyone~

i got the call this morning that i was in and to come on down and fill out my offical admissions forms and financial aid. so i went down and everything was going great until at the end of my financial aid appointment i was told that i even though it looked like everything would be covered by pell grant and stafford loans that i would need to secure an additional student loan for $5000.

the problem with this is that i went through a divorce two years ago and during that time my ex-husband paid no child support and so it was just me. times were tough and i had no choice but to pay the bills that were required to have a roof over mine and my kids head, power, food, etc. during that time i didn't even have a car things were so bad. point is: i accquired some bad credit. i have made a recovery as far as being in a better financial state, but i am stuck with a nasty mess that i have been working hard to repair.

so i need a co-signer. i am 27 and have been going to school without my parents help. they have 3 other children in college, triplets age 19. they have co-signed on loans for the other kids. i talked to my mother today and she didn't tell me no, but she said that she didn't like the way that all of these installment loans were effecting her credit.

i could ask my boyfriend to co-sign. he is an rn and supports my education, but at the end of next summer he will be relocating for good and i will not be going with him.

i am just hoping to god right now that something doesn't happen to mess this up for me. i have worked so hard and i am just praying that a loved one comes through and saves the day, giving me that last little hand up that i need to start a new life for me and my children.

thanks for listening....any comments or words of encouragement would be very appreciated.

DO NOT GIVE UP! When I applied for my school loans I did not need a cosigner, check with fin. aid to see if there is a loan that doesn't need a cosigner. Are you borrow just for school costs or for living expenses too? Another option is to find a hosp. or nursing home that would sponsor you. I live in Florida and there are many places that will pay all your school plus a stipend if you sign a one or two year contract. You could also see if your bank could get you a loan. Last just expalin to your mom your situation, these loans should not effect her credit score as long as they are paid on time. Another thing is you and your mom could wite you a seperate agreement between you two stating you would pay. Have it notorized. This would make it a little for offical and maybe your mom would feel a little more secure. Good Luck! :wink2:

So a little more info...

I do not need a co-signer for the fin-aid loans. I am already getting those. I am also not trying to borrow for living expenses. The school that I am going to is expensive and that is why they make you borrow addition funds to ensure that you have enough to pay them.

Overall, I think that my Mom will cave and do it because she knows how hard I've worked and she's witnessed me make sound decisions and all the hard work that I've done.

The big thing that I have working for me is that there has been 3 other times that my Mom has helped me in financial situations and I made regular payments and paid her off within a year or less. So she knows I will pay her back.

The thing that is working againist me is the the other kids are sucking the life out of her by being irrespondsible.

In the end I know that things will be taken care of it's just the not knowing how or when that is racking my nerves.

Have you considered asking your employer for either a scholarship, tuition reimbursement, or a loan buyback in exchange for agreeing to work for them as a RN when you're done with the program? If this is not available to you, you may want to look around in your area for a facility that does offer this. These agreements are very common in hospitals. That's how I got my RN paid for when I was a LPN. Good luck to you.

My question is what school are you going to? That sounds like a lot of money for what I assume to be a year long program? Correct me if I am wrong. I have been to school in TN and OK, and both of the colleges I attended were reasonable on their tuition. In fact, a pell grant was more than enough to cover both semesters. Some schools like Platt college are simply a scam. They charge you 5 times what a community college does, and although you do get a degree, most of the time you have a lot of courses that will not transfer if you should decide to go on in your education. I would check out other options in your area. Good Luck!

I am having the exact same problem - I can't get approved for any private loans and I unfortunately, cannot get a co-signer

Well I am definately unable to get a private student loan and yes this college is a total rip-off. The problem is that I want to get into school so badly that I don't care. The alternative is that I wait another year retake the two classes that I need in order to get into the RN program at my local CC. I have applied 3 years and haven't gotten in, so that is why I am so desparate.

The other thing about this school is that they said that they would accept my transfer credit and then they wouldn't accept ANY of my A&P/MIcro series because I got all B's besides 1 C-. If they would have accepted those classes it would have gave me a $6300 discount.

What's up with that?

I think that this is just my common sense kicking in and telling me to run.

I would wait till the other college opens up. If your Bridge is costing that much I would think twice. There are now so many private "colleges" that you can basically buy a degree from. In my area of Florida there are three private colleges that no one will hire graduates from. They pay $13,000 to $18,000 for the bridge program! Yes no wait, but the cost! I went to a local community college for $4000 plus books, used $500. Just give is some thought. Good luck! Continuing your education will pay off greatly!:yeah:

Just a thought, but have you looked in your states scholarship programs. I am in chicago and I know illinois will pay for your school expenses as long as you are willing to work for them for a specified amount of time, usually 2 years. This can be accomplished while you are in school as an LPN as well, then you don't have to stay there when you are done. Like I said this is just a thought. Also there are alot of different scholarships out there that dont require any work from you, check with your financial aid office.:nuke:

Can you pay that $5k in installments over the time your in school. don't know how many months your schooling is but it might be manageable depending on your circumstance.

I just found out that I got into RN school at my Local Community College, so I will not be taking that route. I was totally shocked. Woo hoo!
