will you work during school??

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

ill be working 20hrs a week. becuase thats what it takes to keep my health ins. thanks Mitt for making ins mandatory. and either way we do the numbers, i just have to work. my husband is an LPN and hell keep up with his 50hrs a week. and short of eating spaghetti o's and hot dogs, and we all know how expensive food is. we keep everything to a minimum. mortgage, car pmt. etc. like most of us. we dont have any kids so were lucky there. and hubby will be taking over most of the house work so i can study.

so heres my question. will you work during school? how much. are you dreading the sleep deprivation? i am. i like my 10hrs a night.

I'm a single mom, so not working is not an option for me unfortunately. I have a friend last year who went through the same program I will be in, and she was a single mom with two kids who worked part-time. She said it was very doable, so I hope she's right.

I wait tables and a nicer restaurant, so I typically can make pretty good money. I'm hoping to not work at all during the school week and then just work every weekend. We'll see how it all plays out...

Just curious if you have checked to see if you can get unemployment benefits while you are a student. I am pretty sure that I have read somewhere that you can't do both, ( recieve benefits and attend school full time)

Not trying deny you of your miracle, just want you to be prepared if this is indeed the case.

Good Luck To You

Not quite sure but it hasn't been a problem so far and the fin. aid dept. at my school knows I am on unemployment...as a matter of fact, I believe there are specific grants allotted to students who are on unemployment!!! I didn't get a slice of that pie though because each school is only given a certain amount yearly and all of it was gone by the fall semester (LOL!!)...It's okay though because I still qualified for other forms of fin. aid due to my yearly salary (or lack thereof!) and so my costs during school are pretty much covered. But If it does becomes an issue I'm sure my school will inform me. Thanks for the heads up though!!

I am lucky, I have a work at a home job answering phones and I do Pampered Chef. My hubby carries our insurance and most of our bills so no worries there!

i have to work at least 20 hrs. :(

wish, i didn't have to work, so i could dedicate all my free time to studying.

oh well, it won't be forever!!! thank goodness!!:D

I will be working. I have a newspaper delivery route that requires me to wake at 3 a.m. seven days a week. I am finished with work by 5 am.

I think it will be doable and if not I might hire someone to deliver the papers on certain days.

I am a firm believer in perseverance, hard work, and a healthy dose of humor can get a lot accomplished.

you see thats exactly it. it wont be forever. we will double our salary in 10 months. and i dont care how broke or tired i am, he he i say that now. that ive slept all night.

seriously though. im lucky in that i do laundry in a nursing home, so its not like i dont have down time. its not a hard shift just long. its a means to an end.

Good luck to all of you. i know well all make it. we have to. the only other option is slave labor for the rest of our lives

One thing that has helped me get through all the prerequisites for nuring is that I made study cards. I take them everywhere and look at them often.

With the nursing class I will continue to do the cards but I also want to record the classes.

Our LPN program went from September to July, Mondays through Fridays, 8 am to 3 pm......I worked, as a CNA, every Friday, 3-11 shift; Saturdays 7 am to 11 pm; and Sundays 7-3 shift. I am a single mother with 4 children (3 of which were teen daughters during the program) and, while it was BRUTAL, it was do-able......I chose to do it this way so that I would not be working most school days - instead, I studied 3-4 hours per night and was able to oversee (sort of) what my children were doing, and to once-in-a-while make dinner!! Only thing I can say about this schedule is that it is only 11 months.....I figured (rightfully) that if I could carry a child for 9 months I could handle this for 11, and I did (barely!!)....it seems that it both flew, and took forever (again, using the pregnancy analogy - sorry men!!).....and you just set your mind to doing it...then go for it!! Good luck to all new LPN students, and remember, failing out is not an option (keep that as your mantra) because you do not want to do it again!!

I got hired for a flex position at the hospital I hope to work at after I'm done with my program (it's exactly 12 months). But, I'm in a pretty difficult situation. We gave up everything to move in w/my mother who has leukemia, and I decided to go back to school and share her care with her husband.

Our family's never been close, and I have 2 kids. I just realized that, life is hard enough with me on unemployment right now taking care of these people, to include one dying and one healthy adult who are crazy emotionally abusive. So, I decided to suck it up and not sabotage my school by working in a job that won't promise not to call me in during the week when I have school, and just struggle through the next year.

As for my mother's care, she's VERY non-compliant and I can't stand to see her die in front of me because she won't allow anyone to care for her. So I'm putting me and my kids first and getting the heck out of dodge super ASAP.

I keep telling myself that I can't be refined without going through the fire. so, one year won't kill us with me not working.

I'm just about ending my 10th week of school now and somehow me and hubby and our two kids have made it this far without me working! Goes to show how much money we were blowing away when we were a 2-income family!

I'm really hoping that I can do the whole 14 months of school without working. It's rough! Even little things like going out at lunch... I NEVER used to bring my lunch to work! But I guess when you want something bad enough, you'll find a way to get through it. My 13-year-old is being very patient but she's already making out a list of things to buy when Mommy finally gets a job!!!
