Practical LVN School Year Curriculum

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Hi everyone,

I am looking into applying to a LVN school soon.

I wanted to know how the class workload was like.

How long are your semesters? What was your schedule like? Did you work part-time as CNA? (if so how many days a week and how long of a shift?)

If you have the time, can you briefly list a semester of classes for me?

Like I have heard:

One semester (anatomy, physiology, and three other classes or even more!)

Lastly, can you tell me how the workload is like during a normal week? How much homework a week and how tough they were for you?

Thanks so much guys and gals, Sirs and Madams.

I feel I can take the work load since I have taken 6 classes in CSUN without work (WAS VERY THOUGH and is my limit).

OH one more thing, are the classes at your adult school easier than the classes at a four year college? (Like was physiology class easier than the physiology class you took at a community college or university?)

I am currently enrolled in LPN school in Cleveland, Ohio. I don't know what the length of the program is where you are but if I had to give my advice, DO NOT CARRY A FULL TIME SCHEDULE! Nursing school ie very had work and it take tons of dedication and study. Do yourself and your future clients a favor and focus on school. Though I do work its only on the weekends and it only includes home care. I will be seekering facility work soon so that I can gradually re-introduce myself to working in that atmosphere but part time only.

Thank you for posting this! I was wondering the same thing..as i will be starting school in July :)(hopefully..havent had a interview yet but we start financial aide on the 31st)

my school is 1 year long 3 semesters and its very hard, i have been in school almost 2 months and all i have done from day one is study 2-3 hrs a day and my grades are great, i only work part time, the people who dont study as much are not doing well, so u must be ready to focus, its not easy at all but its doable and i have a 6 year old to care for, be prepared to sacrifice, the workload is heavy, i studied 70 pages for a 50 question test and thats how it is all the time, no time for a social life

Thanks steffuturelpn! i REALLY need all the advise and help i can get! Not that i have a social life now haha but the whole studing thing is what im nervous and scare about

i was scared to but my grades are all a's for the first 5 test we've had so far, just dont skimp on the studying and you will be fine, i live in philly and it was 75 degrees yesturday and everyone was outside enjoying the weather and i was studying for 3 hours in the house, oh how i wanted to enjoy the sun, but igot to do what i got to do, you'll do just fine

Hi dvanrs,

I plan to do the same. Get my CNA and work weekends at a home care. Was it a 7 hour shift for you during those weekends?

And when you say facility work I assume you mean acute care in the hospital right? Are you going to just work as a front desk or something like that over there until you have a better opportunity? Is that what you meant?

Guys thank you for the replies. I was wondering, can you give me an idea by posting your semester schedule? Your hardest semester? (Like physio, anatomy, and so on in one semester).

And Nikki, no problemo. I wish you luck in school when you start! I'm sure we will do fine since we both don't have much free time to begin with xD.

Again, thanks for the replies!

My program is 4 semesters, but it's 18 months long because we have the summer off.

For our 1st semester, we had Nursing Fundamentals, A&P I, Nursing lab, and clinical. 2nd semester is Med-Surg I, Pharmacology, Life Span, A&P II, and clinical. I'm halfway through my 2nd semester now.. this semester has definitely been more challenging, not because of the material, but because we have a lot more classes.

So far, it hasn't been too bad- as long as you keep up with your reading and start studying for exams a few days before, instead of just cramming, you should be fine.

I work 24 hours a week on night shift, sometimes more, sometimes less- depends on how many exams or papers I have due that week.

Good luck with school!

Hi Dreameyes,

Thanks for the input. I think I will be able to take on the program while working part time, judging from what you have told me.

Man I just need to find a good CNA school then I'm set!

dvanrs85-what school do you attend? I am also in cleveland, and am looking to apply to lpn school for the summer or fall.

I attend WILLOUGHBY TECH, it is a really good program. I actually work as a independent provider for the state of Ohio. my hours vary from weekend to weekend. though I am seriously considering working weekends at a facility so I can be around more "scenarios".

If you apply now you might be able to start in August. it is a 9 month program with pathways to several colleges. If you don't make the August classes then January is available. Study hard for the entrance exam because its gruesome.

GOOD LUCK AND STUDY HARD

OH YEAH.

My 1st semester consists of

Nutrition 9 weeks( you must pass in order to stay in the program, I'm going to a study group @330 2day)

A and P 18 weeks

Math 18 weeks

Life Span 18- get to know you theorist

Nursing Fundamentals- 18 weeks

Skills Lab 18 weeks

Pharmacology 9 weeks

second semester is med surge, clinicals, IV therapy, CPR, and I'm sure they will think of something else:nurse::D

Hi Dvanrs,

Thank you for your detailed input. It seems like most lvn programs take one class at a time (WHICH I LOVE). I have yet to get a reply from the school to see what their curriculum is like.

Again thanks for the help!
