Not harsh at all. If you make specific mistakes, you will be let out of Nursing school.

There are other schools. She should apply somewhere else. This incident will make her a better nurse in the long run. I'm pretty sure she won't make the same mistake again.

A student can do 1,000 things correctly without recognition, but the one mistake that they make will be magnified. Sorry, but this is the reality of nursing programs and the nursing profession in general.

I wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors and hope that she takes a lifelong lesson away from this unfortunate occurrence. Good luck to her.

A friend of mine that's in the LPN program was doing her clinicals in the ER last week. The man that was brought in had to switch beds and my friend forgot to lock the bed brakes so when they moved him, he fell in the floor. He wasn't hurt but she was dismissed from the program all together.
Is this typical of all LPN programs? I mean, I know that locking the brakes is basic knowledge in nursing but it seemed a little harsh because she was such a good student.

Already starting to eat your young? In the 20 years I have been nursing, I have found many beds unlocked. Falls happen for many reasons, you can not assume the unlocked bed was at fault, although you tell patients not to get up, you set bed alarms, you put them in posey beds, you put them next to the nurses station. you have family in the room. They still manage to fall.

One patient we had rocked a posey bed so hard it went over. Another time a NA left the zipper undone on a posey bed, when the patient promised not to get up and he got out the minute he left. A NA was feeding a patient, sitting next to the bed and the patient fell out into her lap. I know that during every nurses life she will find countless beds unlocked, people will fall. I have never seen a person fired for this.

This poor student will feel bad for a long time, she will be angry, the loss of money she has invested is a waste. Are you experienced nurses replying with this condemnation? You know it is really not the student that should suffer, her teacher is supposed to be watching her, and the teacher is really at fault. It is the teachers responsibility. Just as when I precept sutdents it is my respnsibility to make sure what you do is correct. This is why you are in school, we do not expect you to be perfect. I hope this student fights this. She should find another program, who needs to be in a program that has teachers that do not accept thier responsibility.

i know it seems crazy but yes that can and will happen, a job will fire you on the spot if u dont lock a bed and a patient falls, the job and the school sees this as getting rid of a liability, sorry they are just covering there a**. but dont let this stop u just apply to the next program ,move on and learn from ur mistakes
