Can I handle working/LPN school?

I am reluctant to not work at ALL, because I am going from working full-time to going to school. But I haven't been in LPN school before so I don't know. My program is 18 months, 3 hours a day for the first part and then switches to 2 days of clinicals and 3 days of classroom after 9 months (I think).

I would like to TRY to work 24 hours a week. I work at a walk-in health center I could work 4 six hour shifts a week...do u think this is realistic?

I'm planning on it. I'm a school bus driver though, and my son will be in pre-k. So, in between my morning and afternoon shifts ill be able to study. Plus nights after my son goes to bed I can study. I think it's doable if you plan ahead when you can study.

I think you'll be okay! It's only going to be 3 hours a day! You're just going to have to really learn how to manage your time and squeeze in studying!

It's all about managing your time, I'll be joining you in this dilemma in May.

You'll hear people tell you that you can do it and people DO do it, but the ones in my class who work, even just one day a week, are the ones who are struggling and barely hanging on by their fingernails. We have lost five people so far, and 4 of them tried to hold jobs during school.[/quote']

Ditto for my school. We are about halfway through right now. The people who work come to school asleep and are barely passing. My school is 8 hours per day 5 days per week plus lunch, which makes it a 9 hour day. 3 days per week we commute to clinicals, which have been 1 hour away from school 1 way.

As for me, I really want to work because I need money as I, too, have children and am a single parent.

One of the reasons I don't work much is because I could only fit in 2 days of work on weekends. I am a CNA also and I wouldn't even bring in $700 per month if I worked 2 shifts per weekend. I think 3 shifts per weekend would be crazy because I'd have to go straight from work to school with no sleep. In my area, $700 won't even cover rent in the lowest income/ least desirable areas of town.

I care about my health and my time with my kids too much to strain myself that severely for that much money.

When i started LPN program, I worked 11pm-7am as a nursing assistant in a hospital. I sometimes do 1:1 patient watch and most of the time, the patients were sleeping. When they were sleeping, I was studying as much as I can. After I get off work, I make sure I grabbed a cup of coffee before going to school. My school hours that time was 7:30am to 2:30pm four days a week and one 12-hr clinical day. At the beggining of the program, I was pregnant 4 months and also have my 3 yr old daughter. 6 months along the program, i gave birth to my son and only took 4 days off (3 care plans i had to make for the 4 days off) went back to school right away. Seven of us graduated out of 17 students. I hope this helps. Good luck!
